Paris 2024 Olympics – Other Sports Wednesday 31st July Tips and Betting Preview

Wednesday is another busy day at the Paris 2024 Olympics where there are no fewer than 18 gold medals up for grabs on a day where sport is once again taking place all over France for plenty of us to enjoy and get stuck into.

Once again there are some big names on show over the day with Rafael Nadal back on the tennis court, Katie Ledecky in the swimming pool and plenty of home stars looking to win medals for their country across the day.

Other Sports

There are plenty of highlights across the course of the day away from the medal action. We have already previewed the tennis elsewhere on this site and away from Paris we have the final matches in the group phase of the women’s football while the great USA basketball team will be back in action. The women’s Great Britain hockey team will be looking to spark their campaign into life and then we have another day of action in all of the regular events that last over the majority of the games.

Gymnastics

We have had the team events in the gymnastics and the individual finals get underway on Wednesday with the first of them coming in the men’s all-around contest where the competitors compete on all of the apparatus looking for the best score overall to win the gold medal. Britain have a couple of representatives in this in Jake Jarman and Joe Fraser but the golf medal is expected to be between the Asian pairing of Boheng Zhang and the reigning gold medallist Daiku Hashimoto.

The Chinese gymnast is the favourite for the gold and he will certainly be motivated to deliver the goods here after seeing his teammate come off the horizontal bar twice in the team final to put paid to his chances of gold there. Zhang looks to have the advantage here having performed better of the big two in that team final. Hashimoto put in a solid display on the horizontal bar in that team final but was so poor in the qualifying on the opening day that he won’t even be defending his title on that apparatus later in the week. He had a mare on the pommel horse in qualifying too so the Chinese ace certainly looks to be the better performer so far and can cap that off with the gold here.

Women’s Football

It is the final day of the group phase in the women’s football where unlike in the men’s draw we only lose four teams because two of the best third placed sides make it through to the knockout stage. That means that most of the fancied runners can enjoy themselves without the jeopardy that some of the men’s games on Tuesday carried. With that in mind, the pick of the matches has to be the one between USA and Australia and that has plenty of betting potential to me.

The obvious place to target is goals here. Australia come into the match off the back of that remarkable 6-5 win over Zambia in the last set of games which tells us all we need to know about them at both ends of the pitch while Emma Hayes has already got her USA team playing some lovely football going forward but there is a susceptibility about them in defensive areas. These two met in a cracking match in Tokyo three years ago which ended 4-3 and I’ve got to think this one has at least three goals in it if not a few more.

Swimming

We will head to the pool for our final bet on the fifth day of the Paris 2024 Olympics where there are a number of finals on show as the likes of Katie Ledecky will look to win the women’s 1500m title while the French star Leon Marchand will be looking to add the 200m Buttlerfly and 200m Breaststroke titles to the 400m Individual Medley gold he has already won. It is one of the other finals which gets our attention though.

That is the men’s 100m Freestyle final where the world record holder Zhanle Pan will look to secure the Olympic gold medal in a field which includes the 200m champion from earlier in the week in David Popovici. They could both be upstaged by the Australian swimmer Kyle Chalmers who put in an insane leg in the recent 4x100m final, a leg which would actually have taken the world record had it been swum in singles competition. Pan is actually lucky to have a lane in this final having got in by two spots after the heats and he has been doing plenty of swimming so far this week. Chalmers has only raced that relay and this event and it might be that his freshness is the difference in what is expected to be a tight race. He qualified second fastest for this final which means he will be alongside his main rival and at 7/2 with little between the pair the Aussie must be the favourite here.
