Paul Lawrie Matchplay Golf – Third Placed Playoff & Final Betting Preview

After an intense three days of competition, 62 of the 64 matches in the Paul Lawrie Matchplay have been played and on Sunday the final two matches will take place when the tournament is decided in an 18 hole final while third and fourth place will also be battled for over 18 holes.

Alex Noren and Anthony Wall have made it through to the lucrative final with plenty of cash on the line and the benefits that come with winning an event on the European Tour. The third placed playoff is between James Morrison and Oliver Fisher.

Saturday Recap

We could only bet on the quarter finals on Saturday and the one match that we did bet on we won on with Anthony Wall beating Haydn Porteous at the final hole. He then went on to beat Oliver Fisher in the semi-final while Alex Noren came past James Morrison in the other semi-final after the two had put out Johan Carlsson and Alejandro Canizares respectively in the morning session.

Third Placed Playoff

Two men have really stood out in this tournament and they are Alex Noren and James Morrison and the latter is in this match against Oliver Fisher. Fisher could be more than a little jaded having gone 22 holes before surrendering in his semi-final.

Morrison was beaten by Alex Noren in his semi-final but there is no disgrace in that given how well the Swede is playing but it was the quarter final win over Canizares which caught my eye about the former Open de Espana champion and if he is in that form I expect him to win this match.

Of course we have to be careful about betting on these matches with winning the tournament no longer an option but Morrison has enough side things at stake to give this a good go and with that in mind I will side with him to win this match.

Final

Given that Anthony Wall played 40 holes on Saturday you would have to think it is advantage Alex Noren in the final and that is very much how I see it. The Scottish Open champion was the favourite going into the week and he is a heavy favourite for the final.

Unfortunately from a betting point of view he is far too short to justify backing in the final as a single but we’ve had a decent week in the match betting so I think there is enough mileage in a small double across the two matches with that paying slightly over evens which works out attractive enough.
