The PDC World Darts Championship continues inside Alexandra Palace on Monday evening when another four matches take place in front of a huge crowd as the biggest tournament of the year begins to pick up speed.
As ever in the early stages of the tournament, we have three first round matches on the evening and one match from the second round where Gerwyn Price is the headline attraction as he begins a quest for a second world title.
Niels Zonneveld vs Robert Owen
The opening match of the night sees two tour card holders battling it out when Niels Zonneveld goes up against Robert Owen, a man who might feel like he is already playing with the house money having got in when Dom Taylor was banned from the tournament.
Zonneveld is probably the more established of the two so from that point of view he is probably a worthy favourite here but you have to ignore his record in this tournament if you want to be comfortable backing him at around a 4/7 shot. He has won one of his four matches on this stage but averaged less than 80 in doing so. That will certainly keep the former UK Open semi-finalist Owen interested but the fact he couldn’t quality by right highlights that he hasn’t had the best year but if he is freed up by the knowledge that he shouldn’t be here then he could be dangerous. Those desperate for a bet could probably do worse than back Owen but this is a match with more questions than answers so I’ll leave this one alone.
Connor Scutt vs Ben Robb
The second match of the night pits the rising star Connor Scutt up against the New Zealand thrower Ben Robb with he winner making it through to set up a second round clash against Damon Heta on Saturday evening.
Scutt goes into this tournament off the back of a run to the quarter final of the Players Championship Finals last month and having won a match here last year with an average in the mid-90s we can expect him to perform creditably here. Robb has been here on four occasions and is yet to win a match. He has won two sets in those four matches so you would imagine that Scutt is highly likely to come through here. He is priced accordingly though and I wouldn’t really want to get involved in the price. Unless you wanted to back Scutt to win 3-0 there isn’t really much to like here but in six first round matches to date we’ve only seen two 3-0s so the even money on that might not be that much value.

Cameron Menzies vs Leonard Gates
The last of the first round matches on Monday evening could well be the pick of them as the Scottish star Cameron Menzies will look to make it through to the second round when he takes on the enigmatic Leonard Gates in a tasty looking tie.
Menzies has had an excellent second part of 2024 and as a tour card holder who has won a title on the floor this season he is very much a worthy favourite here but at 1/4 he might be a little on the short side against a player who has a lot of stage experience courtesy of playing in this tournament, the WDF World Championship and the Seniors event regularly in the past. I don’t think Gates has the consistency to win this but Menzies never convinces me as a favourite or on the stage and this could easily turn edgy with a raft of missed doubles. I do think Menzies will edge this but I think the best bet is to back the Scot to win and take over 3.5 sets via the bet builder section on the Bet365 website. 3-1 or 3-2 Menzies feels about right to me.
Gerwyn Price vs Keane Barry
The one match in the second round of the tournament sees the former champion Gerwyn Price looking to make it into the third round when he goes up against a winner from Sunday evening in the form of the Irish ace Keane Barry.
Barry played very well against Kim Huybrechts on the opening night of the event and if he can be consistent and follow that up here then Price might have his work cut out but there is talk of a rejuvenated Price and one which is bang up for going well here. His best level would be sufficiently above that of Barry so the closer he can get to that the better. I’m hoping that we’ll see the Price we know from his best because I am on him outright so I’m going to leave that as much interest in this match but the way Barry played on Sunday evening would suggest he should be good enough for a set if not two before succumbing to defeat.
