The evening session at the PDC World Darts Championship on Tuesday has the makings of being a decent night of arrers with three more first round matches taking place as well as another clash from the second round of the tournament.
Peter Wright is the headline act on Tuesday evening as the former world champion gets his quest for a third title underway on a night where we will also see a return to Alexandra Palace of the ‘Queen of the Palace’ in Fallon Sherrock.
Jeffrey de Graaf vs Rashad Sweeting
The opening match of the night sees Jeffrey de Graaf beginning his quest to follow up an impressive showing here a year ago when he takes on the Latin America and Caribbean qualifier Rashad Sweeting in what should be something of a mismatch.
Gary Anderson will be awaiting the winner of the match in the second round and it would be arguably the biggest shock on this stage if that player isn’t Jeffrey de Graaf. The Dutchman turned Swede had an appealing run to the third round here a year ago and will be wanting to emulate that again here. Sweeting will become the first player from the Bahamas to grace this stage during this match but all the averages I can find of him doesn’t really dress him up too well here. De Graaf is no bigger than 1/20 to win this match and is 4/9 to win 3-0. Unless you want to put that into some kind of accumulator on the evening there isn’t anything to get behind here.
Ricardo Pietreczko vs Xiaochen Zong
The second game of the evening might not be quite as one-sided as the opening match but it isn’t exactly to be too much more competitive as Ricardo Pietreczko takes on the Chinese qualifier Xiaochen Zong for the right to meet the exciting Dutch star Gian van Veen in the second round.
Zong has been to Ally Pally on three previous occasions and has lost out each time. He was beaten 3-0 by Mickey Mansell here a year ago in a match where he averages just 85 and he’ll need an improvement to win here you would think. Pietreczko probably hasn’t had the sort of year he would have wanted in 2024 but he has played in most of the big events and stages like this are no longer alien territory for him. He will have good memories from the last time he was on this stage when he probably should have knocked out the eventual champion Luke Humphries and it would be a huge surprise were he not to come through here and unless something bizarre happens you would imagine the German will win this 3-0.

Ryan Meikle vs Fallon Sherrock
The match which will get the most attention on Tuesday evening is the third match onto the stage where Fallon Sherrock returns to the scene of some of her greatest nights when she takes on the tour card holder Ryan Meikle.
Sherrock being in this match automatically elevated the profile of this contest but the fact that the winner will face Luke Littler in the second round is only going to further increase the hype around this one. Can Sherrock win and set up the match which could break the internet? She won’t be fazed by Meikle, who would be the most unpopular winner ever it has to be said, not just from the fans but potentially the PDC themselves, however the Englishman is favourite for a reason. You wouldn’t say his form over the whole of 2024 would cause Sherrock any sleepless nights but recently Meikle has improved to a leave which the female star might struggle to match over five sets. That is assuming Meikle is given an even crack at this match and I’m far from convinced that he will be. The crowd will be right behind Sherrock here and there is certainly juice in her 3/1 price but I don’t think she is quite as good as she was a couple of years ago and who knows how the mental meltdown of her boyfriend the night before will impact her. I’ll take a watching brief on this one rather than a betting one.
Peter Wright vs Wesley Plaisier
The final match of the night is the one second round clash on the card which sees the former world champion Peter Wright taking on the man who won the Winmau World Masters earlier in the year in Wesley Plaisier.
I think it is fair to say that a heck of a lot more was expected of Plaisier in the first round. He hasn’t just won the World Masters this year, he has won a Players Championship event too, but there were few signs of that during a hard-fought win over Ryusei Azemoto on Monday afternoon. Plaisier averaged just 82.56 for that match and his level was a lot lower than that for much of the match. That will give Wright plenty of confidence here but he hasn’t exactly pulled up any trees himself for much of 2024. You have to go back to the UK Open for the last time he won a ranking event match on TV this term and in that time he has averaged 74.81 at the European Championship 84.75, 83.44 and 83.55 at the Grand Slam and 88.66 at the Players Championship Finals so he feels like a very vulnerable favourite to me. Admittedly, you will need to put most of the first round win for Plaisier to the back of your mind when backing him but the one thing which was interesting was his best darts in that match came when he was 2-1 down and no longer the favourite to win. The fact that he isn’t the favourite to win here and has little pressure on him with a tour card secured for next season. He has got his debut on this stage out of the way and knows he beat Wright in the final Players Championship event of the season just last month. The Dutchman feels good value here.
