PGA Tour Championship Golf – DFS Fantasy Breakdown

It might be the final week of the PGA Tour season but that doesn’t mean there isn’t another tidy amount of cash to win playing fantasy golf. As ever our partners at DraftKings have some excellent value games for the Tour Championship with prizes as much as $100,000 for as little as $4!

Profile

There is only 30 men in the field this week and there is no cut so finding low picked players isn’t going to happen in all likelihood so I think we’re looking for those who are going to occupy the top 10 and score well to get us a decent chunk of the pot.

As ever we like to use statistics around our fantasy picks and with this course being one for the accurate hitters and those who find the greens in the right number and putt well our three key statistics are quite obvious this week. They are:

  • Driving Accuracy (DA)
  • Greens in Regulation (GIR)
  • Strokes Gained Putting (SGP)

Usually we split our groups of players up into three but with there only being men teeing it up this week we will just do them in two sections this time.

Star Men

We will cover those worth more than $7,500 in this section. Exactly 15 players are in this group which is perfect.

MAIN PICK – Dustin Johnson $11,700

We’re having to pay top dollar for the FedEx Cup leader but we are doing so for good reason. He showed when he tore the BMW Championship apart two weeks ago just what form he is in and guess what? He could well do the same to this course too. There isn’t anyone in the game driving the ball better than DJ right now and the rest of his game looks in good order. With a short par 5 on the course and some holes for him to get after it is hard to see how he doesn’t score big again.

PICK – Adam Scott $10,100

Another man with destiny in his own hands this week and with the driver in his hand he has a significant advantage on many in the field. His shortcomings arrive on the greens but he’s been putting well recently and if that continues again the Australian could be a very very happy man at the end of the week. So could we if we stump up the cash to find a place for him in our side.

PICK – Paul Casey $9,500

If you can’t afford both of the two men above then Paul Casey is a fair safety valve. He is in the form of his life right now and statistically ticks plenty of boxes. He is 31 in DA, 2 in GIR and although his SGP ranking is low he has holed plenty in these playoffs so he’s all set for another big showing in the final showdown.

PICK – Russell Knox $8,000

Another in the steady eddie bracket. Knox sits 8 in DA and 6 in GIR on the Tour this year so he is going to make his way around this golf course how it should be played. If he can find the touch on the greens then the Scot, who might feel he has a point to prove having been omitted next week, should score very nicely.

AVOID – Jason Day $10,300

That pullout on the final day in the BMW Championship doesn’t sit well with fantasy players and at this price do we really want a potential repeat if he gets to a stage where he can’t win? Not worth the risk especially with others around his price offering much better appeal.

AVOID – Phil Mickelson $8,100

Lefty sits 5 in SGP on Tour this year but that only tells half the story. Getting into the putting positions is often his problem and he is just too erratic on a course with so much danger for my liking. You would think Mickelson will be in with the fishes once or twice too often at some point and that could cost him, and us were we to take him.

Best of the Rest

We’ll save this section for those who cost $7,500 or less of which there are 15 of those too.

PICK – Emiliano Grillo $6,900

Not much to say here that I’ve not said in our betting preview. He is monstrous from tee to green and if he can get the short stick working early on then he is going to run the top boys close. Provided more than 70pts in his last five tournaments and that’s everything we want and more at this price.

PICK – Ryan Moore $6,800

Another who is creaming the ball nicely and goes into the week 15 on the DA statistic. If his irons are on a going well then Moore’s good recent run is set to continue. Third here on his last visit in 2012 and he’s an eminently better player now so I’m expecting big things once again.

PICK – Si Woo Kim $6,700

Winners of the Wyndham Championship tend to have good records in this tournament and there is no more recent winner of that event than Kim so he is worth including on that basis. It was only last month he landed that tournament so he’s in good form and for someone to slot in and create room for the more expensive players he ticks the boxes.

PICK – Jason Dufner $6,400

Not been here since a top 10 in 2013 when a poor first round cost him so much more but he put up 80pts at the aforementioned Wyndham Championship earlier in the year and we know he is a tee to green machine. If he can find a couple of hot days with the short stick he should break the top 10 again and go very deep.

AVOID – Kevin Chappell $7,200

There is no doubting Chappell’s talent but he is a little too much all or nothing for us to strike this week. There are those in the 6,000s range which offer much better value and while he’s guaranteed four rounds we’re with those this week.

AVOID – Jhonattan Vegas $6,600

Another one who is too erratic around this track for our liking. All the way down in 144th for DA this season and only as high as 76 in SGP. He does sit 10 for GIR but that is only boosted by certain weeks where he has got hot. All in all he isn’t for us despite his birdie potential.
