Premier League 2021-22 – Liverpool vs Man Utd Tips, TV and Betting Preview

There are a number of midweek matches in the Premier League this week with the first of them one of the biggest fixtures of any season traditionally as Liverpool play host to Manchester United in a real heavyweight clash.

Liverpool will move to the top of the table should they avoid defeat in this match while Manchester United will go level on points with Tottenham in fourth place if they can find the victory they will desire against their rivals.

Where to watch

The match will be shown live and in full on the Sky Sports Main Event and Sky Sports Premier League channels with the build-up beginning at 7pm and the match itself kicking off at 8pm.

Liverpool

There is no getting away from what a special season this could be for Liverpool. They already have the Carabao Cup stored up in their trophy cabinet, are through to the FA Cup final and the Champions League semi-final and they will go top of the Premier League table if they can avoid defeat here. Each match that they win from here on in will see talk of the quadruple intensify but it is getting louder already and it doesn’t appear to be stalling them in any way.

Liverpool were held by Manchester City in their last Premier League game but then got the better of them in the FA Cup semi-final on Saturday afternoon. It might be too early to say that they are unstoppable this season but this is very much a chance to pile the pressure onto Manchester City in the race for the title so we can expect the Reds to be even more up for this game than they might have been in normal circumstances.

Manchester United

If Manchester United get themselves together and end the season in fourth spot then it will be considered an acceptable campaign but as no stage is it going to get any better than that. If they aren’t able to finish in the top four then this will be a season remembered for all the wrong reasons. They haven’t been good enough at any stage really and their lack of consistency has been quite alarming when you consider the personnel they have at their disposal.

United will head to Anfield off the back of just two wins in their last six outings in the Premier League and the second of those was against Norwich City on Saturday and you couldn’t exactly claim they were overly convincing in that match. It isn’t much better for the Red Devils on their travels either. They have won just three of their last 10 away matches and one of those was against Leeds who were just cannon fodder for them at the time.

Team News

Jurgen Klopp has declared no fresh injury news but he is expected to rotate his squad from the cup semi-final at the weekend with Diogo Jota and Jordan Henderson two players who are likely to come back into the starting XI.

Manchester United have confirmed that understandably Cristiano Ronaldo will miss out on this match after the tragic news of the loss of his son. Fred and Scott McTominay are doubts while Edinson Cavani is definitely out. Bruno Fernandes is expected to be fit despite a car accident at the weekend.

Betting

It is hard to see anything but a comfortable Liverpool win here. The only thing that could hold them back here is fatigue because I don’t think Manchester United are good enough or consistent enough to keep close to their rivals. We saw that in the reverse fixture at Old Trafford where Liverpool ran riot and won 5-0 and although United can sit a little deeper and play for a draw on their travels I just don’t think they’re good enough to get it.

It would be hard to make a case for a full strength United side here but one which will be without two top class attacking options in Cristiano Ronaldo and Edinson Cavani as well as their regular central midfielders is even harder to support. Liverpool took the best team in the country to the cleaners in the first half on Saturday and a similar start here should see them run out very easy winners and turn the pressure right up on City.
