Premier League 2021-22 – Saturday 14th August Matches Tips, TV and Betting Preview

The opening weekend of the Premier League season continues on Saturday when another seven matches take place up and down the country in the competition with 14 sides looking to get their campaign started in style.

For the first time since Covid-19 was a thing we have Premier League matches that are not on TV in the UK but there are two that are on what looks like being an entertaining afternoon of football in the top flight.

Early Kick Off

The action begins at Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon when a slightly new look Manchester United host rivals Leeds United in a fixture which provided plenty of excitement last season and hopefully more of the same comes along here. Manchester United are expected to give a debut to star summer signing Jadon Sancho while all eyes will be on Marcelo Bielsa and his men to see if they can build on a fine first season back in the league last term.

3pm Matches

There are five matches in the traditional 3pm slot but unlike last season none of them will be on the TV. The big one of those five comes at Stamford Bridge where the Champions League winners kick off their campaign with a London derby against Crystal Palace, who begin life without Roy Hodgson and under Patrick Vieira. The other appealing match from these five come at the King Power Stadium where Leicester City start their season with a home clash against Wolverhampton Wanderers just a week on from winning the Community Shield.

Two sides who finished much lower in the table last season than they would have wanted open up the new campaign against each other when Burnley welcome Brighton and Hove Albion to Turf Moor while the Rafael Benitez era begins at Everton with a home match against a troubled Southampton side. The other match at the usual time sees newly promoted Watford playing host to a Jack Grealish-less Aston Villa side, a team who offer plenty on paper this season.

Late Game

There is one match in the evening on Saturday and it comes from Carrow Road where for the second season in three Norwich City take on Liverpool on the opening day. Last time the two sides met at Anfield in a match Liverpool came out on top in and Jurgen Klopp will be hoping for a similar result here but Norwich have the chance to show they have learned the lessons of the last time they were in the Premier League and that they have a lot more to give this time.

Betting

I like two bets over the course of the afternoon in the Premier League with the first of them coming in the early kick off at Old Trafford where I’m expecting Manchester United and Leeds United to serve up a few goals. There were eight in this particular fixture last year and with a packed Old Trafford crowd cheering the home side on I’m expecting goals in this game too. We know Leeds are better going forward than they are defending and that they fear nobody and will take the game to anyone but United look a very efficient unit this term, especially up front with the addition of the exciting Jadon Sancho. It is hard to see three goals not coming in this one so I like over 2.75 goals in this one.

The other bet I like is for Everton to do the business against Southampton. Southampton look to have had a very disjointed preparation for the new season and have lost a couple of key men in Danny Ings and Jannik Vestergaard. To be fair they have got their replacement in for Ings in Adam Armstrong but he only joined this week so he’ll need to get into tune with his new teammates. They haven’t had the chance to replace Vestergaard which is more of an issue. Everton had a rotten home record under Carlo Ancelotti but Rafael Benitez usually looks to make his home ground a fortress and with fans back in I expect Goodison Park to be a tough place to go again, especially in this match where the stadium will be full for the first time in almost 18 months. Everton have exciting attacking options and Benitez won’t have shirked the defensive side of the game and in Southampton they have a side who are probably there for the taking so I like the home side here.
