Premier League 2021-22 – Sunday 2nd January Matches Tips, TV and Betting Preview

Another four matches take place in the Premier League on Sunday as the top flight continues to kick off 2022 in style. Among the games we have two supposed title contenders on show and the battle to avoid the drop continuing.

Two of the four matches are live on the TV in the Super Sunday show while that programme will provide regular updates on the other games so it feels like a good opportunity to sit back and watch some tasty action.

Sunday’s fixtures are as follows: (2pm unless stated; UK TV in brackets)

Brentford v Aston Villa (Sky Main Event & Sky Premier League)

Everton v Brighton & Hove Albion

Leeds United v Burnley

Chelsea v Liverpool (4.30pm – Sky Main Event & Sky Premier League)

Preview

The televised action remains in the capital on Sunday and it starts with what I imagine was due to be billed as Dean Smith returning to Brentford but actually it is Steven Gerrard to who will take Aston Villa down the M6 to battle the Bees for three valuable points. Once that is done all eyes will turn to Stamford Bridge to see if Chelsea or Liverpool can launch any kind of opposition to Manchester City in the title race when they collide in the big game of the day.

The other two matches sees struggling teams looking for what would be a huge three points after seeing Watford lost this weekend already and with Newcastle United and Norwich City having had their matches postponed. The big one at the bottom comes from Elland Road where Leeds United return from their Covid enforced break when they host Burnley. Everton are currently having issues with Covid but their home match against Brighton and Hove Albion will go ahead despite that.

Betting

I’ll go with one bet over the course of the afternoon and while I expect the fortunes of Everton to improve with Dominic Calvert-Lewin back in their ranks, they are having issues with Covid and even if the majority of their team have been unaffected, which probably isn’t the case considering their previous match was called off, they would have had their practice ahead of the match severely affected and I think it is only fair to expect them to struggle as a result.

Everton only had one win in their last 11 matches before Covid got involved in their squad so you would think they will be there for the taking for a Brighton and Hove Albion side who will be on a high after picking up four points over Christmas, including a good point at Stamford Bridge in midweek. We all know Brighton look to take the game to the opposition and Everton might be ripe for picking off if the Seagulls can show any side of composure in front of goal. Given we get a good price on them with all the draw cover we require I think they are worthy of being backed here.
