Premier League 2021-22 – Thursday 16th December Matches Tips, TV and Betting Preview

The midweek round of action in the Premier League concludes with what should have been three matches but because of yet more issues with Covid-19 we are down to two games, assuming they are fine to go ahead and aren’t cancelled at the last minute.

Both the matches will be live on the TV for us in the UK to enjoy, that is based on the assumption that they do get played, although if you want to watch them both you’ll need a second device as they are on at a similar time.

Chelsea vs Everton (19.45 – BT Sport 2)

The first game to kick off comes from Stamford Bridge where Chelsea will be looking to keep hold of the coattails of Manchester City when they host an Everton team who are in desperate need of a result to ease the rapidly mounting pressure on Rafael Benitez.

Chelsea begin the night in third place in the table but are suddenly looking a little vulnerable having only won two of their last four matches and conceding seven goals in that time. They still don’t look as problematic as Everton do and rapidly their win over Arsenal last week is looking like a fluke rather than the sign of an upturn in form at present. Everton do have the excuse that injuries are beginning to really hurt them and the news that Richarlison is out for a while isn’t going to help their cause at all. If Chelsea weren’t suddenly shipping a large number of goals I’d have looked to get on them in some fashion but they are and that puts me off taking them.

Liverpool vs Newcastle United (20.00 – BT Sport 1)

The other match on the evening is one of the best historical fixtures in the Premier League as Liverpool host Newcastle United at Anfield. Those 4-3 matches still live in folklore of the competition but we probably shouldn’t expect a repeat of that here.

Liverpool will know this is a match they can’t afford to lose if they want to keep close order to Manchester City and they are heavily expected to win the match and win it with a bit in hand. After seeing the way Newcastle defended at Leicester on Sunday afternoon I was hoping to grab a decent price on over 3.5 goals here as Liverpool are more than capable of covering that themselves but unfortunately bookmakers are up to speed with that. There might be value in taking Liverpool to win to nil however even at 20/23. Liverpool have won 11 matches this season and 10 of them have been without the opposition scoring. The only game in that run which saw both teams finding the net was at Everton recently but I’m not sure derby matches can ever be a true form guide. Sunday was the fourth time Newcastle have lost without scoring and number five may well come along very quickly here.
