The third to last round of matches in the Premier League season gets underway on Saturday afternoon when half of the division are in action on a day where the race for the European places are in the spotlight once again.
Usually we would have two TV matches to enjoy in the UK on a Saturday but with one of the channels focusing on a Sunday game we have just the one here which comes after the other four matches take place. Updates on those come in the usual places.
3pm Matches
All eyes will most likely be on St Mary’s Stadium on Saturday afternoon where Manchester City will look to continue their pursuit of Champions League football next term when they travel to take on already relegated Southampton in a match anyone not connected to the Saints will expect a win for the visitors from. Brentford are the next highest ranked side on show on Saturday afternoon and much like Manchester City, they go on their travels to a relegated side. They head to Portman Road to take on Ipswich Town. The Bees are suddenly in with a good chance of a maiden European campaign if they can keep winning so the onus is on them to do that.
Brighton and Hove Albion haven’t given up hope of playing European football next season in some guise but they are going to need to go to Molineux and end the fine recent home run of Wolverhampton Wanderers if they are to keep up that challenge. Fulham are another side who could end the campaign in Europe next season. They will pretty much definitely need to win their last three for that to be a realistic proposition. They welcome low on motivation Everton at Craven Cottage.

Late Game
The race for Europe continues in the late game on Saturday, which is the only match to be shown live on the TV in the UK. That takes us to the Vitality Stadium where AFC Bournemouth will welcome Aston Villa. Villa are still in the hunt for the Champions League spots but they have to win this if they want to be in with the elite next season. Bournemouth have suddenly got a route into the minor European competitions now that the Europa League is an all-English affair and a win for the Cherries would heighten their hopes of needing their passports next term so this should be a cracking way to round off a competitive day of action.
Betting
There isn’t a huge amount that floats my boat over the course of the day. I think the better matches probably come along on Sunday in truth but one bet looks worth taking and that is over 3 goals in the match at Portman Road where Ipswich Town host Brentford. When you consider that the reverse meeting had seven goals in it there is an easy case to be made that this line looks on the low side, especially when as the away side Brentford have to win to maintain their European challenge.
Brentford have covered this line themselves in two of their last three matches but this might be all about Ipswich and their defence which has shipped two or more in eight of their last 10 matches and in their last seven matches at Portman Road, including to a terrible Southampton side. Ipswich have goals in them though which encourages that they can get on the scoresheet but Brentford have scored five at Southampton and four at Leicester so there is no guarantee we will need them to score here. Whether Brentford do it on their own or Ipswich contribute to the scoring without any competitive pressure on them, over 3 goals looks a solid play here.
