Premier League 2024-25 – West Ham vs Newcastle Tips, TV and Betting Preview

The final match of the Premier League weekend takes place in the Monday Night Football which comes from the London Stadium as West Ham United host a Newcastle United side who have a much bigger commitment in the capital later in the week.

This is the last match Newcastle will play before they compete in the Carabao Cup final on Sunday and it will be interesting to see how they approach this as a result. West Ham are improving under Graham Potter and will look to maintain their upward curve.

Where to watch

The match will be shown live and in full on the Monday Night Football show which will be screened on Sky Sports Main Event and Sky Sports Premier League. The programme begins at 6.30pm with kick off at 8pm.

West Ham United

Although the table tells us that West Ham United are only two points above the relegation zone, they are 16 points ahead of it going into this match so they can begin to prepare for another season in the Premier League and really the last 11 games of the season now is all about continuing the improvement under Graham Potter so that next term can offer up a lot more than what this one has done. Building up a head of steam, certainly at home, would help with that.

West Ham have won their last two matches but even before then there were signs that the wheel was beginning to turn under Graham Potter. He has certainly made them much harder to score against and although you wouldn’t really suggest that the Hammers are flying offensively under him, they are improving as players are returning and having had 11 days since the last match you would imagine a lot more work would have gone into that area of the pitch.

Newcastle United

This is a huge week in the times of Newcastle United. While they are still chasing a spot in the Champions League via their league position in the Premier League, this club have been starved of silverware for far too long and they will get the chance to rectify that on Sunday. A win here will move Newcastle into the top six in the Premier League table but the bigger game is that one on Sunday and it will be interesting to see just how much of an eye they have on that match.

Newcastle go into this match off the back of a run of three defeats in four outings, although it should be noted that two of those defeats were away to Manchester City and Liverpool, although they looked quite tame in both of those outings. In fact, Newcastle have never truly convinced on their travels under Eddie Howe and now injuries and suspensions are beginning to mount up against them as well which isn’t exactly ideal.

Team News

Graham Potter has suggested that he could have Lucas Paqueta back despite his upcoming hearing into alleged betting activities. He will be without Crysensio Summerville, Michail Antonio and Niclas Fullkrug but Vladimir Coufal could return.

Newcastle United will be without the suspended Anthony Gordon so Harvey Barnes is expected to deputise for him. Lewis Hall and Sven Botman are both out injured so the Toon are going to be light in the defensive areas of the pitch.

Betting

I liked the look of West Ham United in this match before the injuries and suspensions for Newcastle United came along and I certainly want to be on them now that they have appeared. Newcastle just have to have an eye on the cup final on Sunday, especially when you consider that injuries are mounting up. A win on Sunday secures European football next season and although they will want Champions League action they could still get there with the confidence that winning silverware would bring.

West Ham technically aren’t playing for anything other than prize money for the remainder of the campaign but I do think Graham Potter will want his team to finish the season well both for momentum to take into the next one with them but also to make his club a more viable option for transfers in the summer. West Ham certainly look to be trending in the right direction and against a Newcastle side who may have their eyes elsewhere I think the Hammers can take advantage but I’ll keep the draw onside just to be on the safe side.
