Premier League 2025-26 – Sunderland vs Everton Tips, TV and Betting Preview

The Premier League weekend ends with another Monday Night Football as the lights are turned on at the Stadium of Light where Sunderland will go in search of another three points when they welcome Everton to Wearside.

These two sides would have been expected to struggle at the beginning of the season but Sunderland have the chance to finish the weekend second in the table with a win here while Everton can move up three places with victory of their own.

Where to watch

The match will be shown live and in full on the Monday Night Football programme which will be shown on the Sky Sports Main Event and Sky Sports Premier League channels. The show begins at 6.30pm ahead of the 8pm kick off.

Sunderland

Sunderland made a huge investment in their squad in the summer with the aim of remaining in the Premier League now that they have completed the lengthy journey back to the big time, but I doubt anyone would have seen them having the potential to move into second place a quarter of the way into the season. That is the potential that they have if they can pick up another win in front of their own fans here and you would imagine that is all the incentive that they need to give this everything that they have got.

Sunderland head into this contest unbeaten on home soil with three wins from their four matches and a draw against Aston Villa in that time, which is certainly no bad result. The Black Cats have only conceded a couple of goals in those matches and have scored eight times so at the Stadium of Light they are working well at both ends of the pitch. Sunderland will be buoyed by their dramatic late win against Chelsea last weekend and feel like a side on the up.

Everton

After two wins from their opening three matches, things have gone a little quiet for Everton in recent times and now they have slid to just three spots above the relegation zone and in need of a result just to ease any growing nerves should the sides currently in the bottom three react positively to new managerial appointments. Everton have won just one of their last six outings and were soundly beaten last weekend by a Spurs side who have looked average since then which isn’t a great look.

Scoring goals has been a problem for Everton for a while but just four goals in their last six matches will tell us where the Toffees need to improve if they are going to climb up the table. They have shipped five goals in their last two matches, although Manchester City and Tottenham wasn’t the easiest schedule in that time but without Jarrad Branthwaite there isn’t a huge amount of pace in the defence which could leave them susceptible to the pace which Sunderland have at their disposal.

Team News

Sunderland defender Omar Alderete is expected to return to the squad having recovered from concussion and Regis Le Bris is expected to have Dan Neil and Simon Adingra available for selection as well, although both could be on the bench.

Jarrad Branthwaite remains missing for Everton in this match while Nathan Patterson is also out of the side. David Moyes could be tempted to make a change up front with Thierno Barry a possible replacement for Beto.

Betting

This is an intriguing match to assess and the first feeling is that the draw is a massive runner so I wouldn’t want to be putting on any bets that has that outcome in play. It is intriguing because these are two teams who function so much better without the ball than they do with it but someone has to have the majority of it and it will be interesting to see who that is. Normal logic would tell you that the onus will be on Sunderland to have it but in their four home Premier League games they have had 37% against West Ham, 54% against Brentford, 29% in the draw with Aston Villa and 41% against Wolves.

This is a fanbase that has no issue with watching their team have little of the ball at home and exploiting teams on the counterattack. Everton on the other hand have had over 50% possession in three of their last four matches but have only come out on top in one of them so I think Sunderland are the better bet without the draw in play. If you include the Carabao Cup match at Wolves, Everton have scored four goals in five away games this term, three of which came in the league game at Wolves. The Toffees have lost to Leeds and failed to beat West Ham and I don’t think they win here either. I’ll go with Sunderland without the draw in play.
