The Premier League Darts season hits Liverpool on Thursday evening when night six of the competition takes place with all eight players looking for more points which will push them towards the semi-finals at the end of the campaign.
Given the way the season has started this is a bigger night for some than others with those who haven’t got off to great starts probably in need of the points more than those who have started well to date.
Gerwyn Price vs Peter Wright
The opening quarter final of the evening sees two former world champions battling it out for a spot in the night six semi-finals when Gerwyn Price takes on Peter Wright in the pick of the opening matches on paper.
Price has had a mixed start to his season but it has been good enough to find him in the top four heading to Liverpool whereas Wright has lost all five quarter finals so far and probably needs to find four nightly wins if he is going to be a factor when it comes to the concluding stages of the competition. There is no real sign that Wright is finding form though. He was well beaten by Richie Burnett in the UK Open last week and doesn’t look anything close to his best. Price looks in much better shape but it remains to be seen whether the crowd give him an even break here. Either way, this is an easy match to skip over.
Michael van Gerwen vs Jonny Clayton
The second quarter final in Liverpool sees the current table topper and winner of the last two weeks of the Premier League in Michael van Gerwen going up against a Jonny Clayton who topped the table last season.
Clayton hasn’t got off to the fast start he would have wanted this season but in the last couple of weeks he has closed the gap on the top four. Van Gerwen has scooted clear at the top of the table but he’ll be keen to put his foot on the gas over the course of the evening to make up for missing out on the UK Open title in a deciding leg in the final at the weekend. Something tells me that Clayton might be an ounce of value here if the lead MVG has means he isn’t quite as motivated as he might be but I wouldn’t be certain of that so I’ll happily leave this one alone.

Chris Dobey vs Nathan Aspinall
The penultimate quarter final of the night sees the two outsiders for the tournament before a dart was thrown battling it out when The Masters champion Chris Dobey takes on Nathan Aspinall for a place in the last four on the evening.
Dobey has already won a night in the Premier League. The problem for him was that was week one and he has lost every match he has played since then so he needs a win for his own confidence and belief. Aspinall hasn’t won a night yet but he has won five matches in the Premier League this season and you sense he is better suited to the test. Dobey did play well at the UK Open last weekend though but so did Aspinall until he ran into van Gerwen in the last eight. My preference would be for Aspinall to come through here but there’s no value in the price so I’ll leave him alone particularly as he can be hit and miss on the doubles.
Michael Smith vs Dimitri Van den Bergh
The last of the quarter finals sees the world champion Michael Smith looking to move into the semi-final on the evening when he takes on the UK Open semi-finalist Dimitri Van den Bergh in a pretty good looking contest.
These two met in the final of week three of the competition when Smith came out on top and given his locality to Liverpool I would expect him to double down on that result here but Van den Bergh is playing a lot better than his results have suggested in this competition and he shouldn’t be ruled out by any means. I think rather than get involved in the match outcome, especially as Smith is pretty short and I do expect him to win, the best way into this match is to take the 180s. There were seven of them when they met in that week three final and while Smith probably hasn’t been as relentless on the 60 as we would expect this season, he’s on home soil and will need to score well to win this one. You can get 13/10 on over 6.5 180s and that just feels a little too big with both men capable of slamming in the maxis.
