We have reached night six of the Premier League Darts season where the eight players head to Nottingham on Thursday evening for what feels like a big evening for the chasing pack as we head towards the halfway mark.
The top two in the table meet in the quarter final this week so only one of those will be gaining points which should give the chasing pack the chance to capitalise and enhance their own spot in the standings.
Luke Humphries vs Luke Littler
The opening match of the night should set a pretty decent standard as the top two in the world rankings and the table meet when Luke Humphries meets Luke Littler in a clash in which the winner will be favourite to win the night.
These two usually deliver great matches and it would be daft to think we are going to get any different here given that both men have warmed up for this night with decent runs in the Players Championship events in midweek. Usually when they collide the 180s flow. That wasn’t the case in their first meeting this season when a whistler got involved to put both men off but in their second battle in Exeter there was 11 180s in 10 legs and it is that which I would expect more of here. The 180 line for this one is 7.5 and this is probably the only matchup in this competition that I would take the over in. These two are 180 machines. Between them they have hit eight or more 180s in the quarter final in three of the five weeks so far and I think they combine for eight here too.
Rob Cross vs Chris Dobey
The second quarter final of the evening will see two men who are outside the top four getting the chance to close the gap on those who are above them in the standings when the nine-dart man from last week, Rob Cross, takes on the solid Chris Dobey for a spot in the nightly semi-final.
Cross was excellent last week and really should have made the final but suffered the recent trend of the curse of the perfect leg in the last four but if he plays to that level again this week he is entitled to be hard to beat here. Dobey is consistent, he’ll score well but as ever with him you wonder how his doubling will hold up under the most pressure. Dobey should have beaten Luke Littler last week so he is playing well and always has the potential to be dangerous. That should ensure a competitive match here, especially given the positions of both in the table, but it is one I can’t find a genuine angle on so I’ll leave this one alone.

Stephen Bunting vs Gerwyn Price
The second half of the draw begins with the other two players who currently sit outside the top four when rock bottom Stephen Bunting takes on Gerwyn Price, a man who has a weekly win in the Premier League this term but has only won one match in the other four weeks.
You get the feeling that this is now or never for Bunting as he looks to get himself into this campaign and I think he is a live outsider in this match. Regular readers will know I don’t like siding with Price in this tournament. His record in it is very ordinary and I always think the crowd is a large reason for that and taking on the crowd favourite here he might not get much in the way of assistance. Bunting has lost all five matches he has played this season but he has played so much better than the results suggest. Bunting took a couple of weeks to get going in this tournament but from week three onwards his averages have been 100.49, 104.89 and 97.06. Price has lost his last two quarter finals with averages of 89.77 and 90.11 and lost to Bunting when these two met in a Players Championship event on Wednesday. Bunting actually has a higher tournament average than Price and has won their last three meetings. I’ll take the Bullet at odds against.
Nathan Aspinall vs Michael van Gerwen
The last of the quarter finals sees the two men other than the two Lukes who are in the top four meeting when third placed Nathan Aspinall takes on fourth placed Michael van Gerwen with the winner having the opportunity to put further distance between themselves and the chasing pack.
Aspinall has been in very good form in this competition having reached two of the five finals but when you consider that he has the lowest average of the eight players in the tournament, timing has been his friend so far and you just wonder how long that can go on for. Van Gerwen has won four of the five quarter finals he has played but still hasn’t gone past a semi-final this season. He has looked troubled at times but some of his averages in the Players Championship events in midweek suggest that he is starting to find his game again. That makes me think that he’ll come through this but he’s odds on so I’ll leave that alone.
Night 6 Betting
The draw this week makes for a very interesting betting market and plenty of potential there because only one of the Lukes will be in the semi-final. Whoever wins the match between Luke Humphries and Luke Littler will be the favourite to win the night but there has to be the potential for a comedown for whoever it is so I’m happy to take someone down the betting here. It makes sense to target the bottom half of the draw just to give someone the chance to get rid of Humphries or Littler and make life a little smoother.
I’m going to take a chance on Michael van Gerwen at the bottom of the draw. He played in the Players Championship events in the last couple of days where he played seven matches and his second lowest average was 98.62 with a highest two of 108.87 and 111.13 so he looks to be stringing some good form together. I think he will beat Nathan Aspinall in the quarter final and whoever he meets in the semi-final he will be the favourite and even against a Luke in the final he wouldn’t be without a chance. At 13/2 I’ll pay to find out.
