The final day of the Presidents Cup takes place in Montreal on Sunday and it is singles all the way to determine where the trophy goes as the 12 players on each team go out against one opponent looking for the point their side needs.
America wriggled clear on the penultimate day of the competition when they won three of the four foursomes matches in the afternoon and they lead 10-7 going into the final need and need just 5.5 points from the 12 on offer to win the cup. Internationals need a daunting looking 8.5 to reclaim it.
First Six Matches
Given the state of play in the Presidents Cup it is expected that the first six matches on Sunday will dictate the pattern of play and as such there is no surprise that both captains have put a fine player out first as Jason Day meets Xander Schauffele. Match two is the first one which will get real interest as Tom Kim looks to fire up the band when he takes on the last WGC Match Play winner in Sam Burns in a great looking match. Two of the best in the respective teams meet in match three when Hideki Matsuyama goes up against the world number one Scottie Scheffler before the men who partnered those players on Saturday meet as Sungjae Im plays Russell Henley. Match five will see the first Canadian player out onto the course when Taylor Pendrith takes on Patrick Cantlay before we reach the halfway point of the session with Si Woo Kim looking to continue his fireworks when he meets Keegan Bradley.

Later Six Matches
It remains to be seen just how much importance there will be on the second set of six matches but they get underway with a home player who will want to finish a home Presidents Cup in positive fashion when Corey Conners goes up against Tony Finau. Min Woo Lee then plays a first Presidents Cup singles match when he takes on the former US Open champion Wyndham Clark before two men who sat out on Saturday collide when Byeong-hun An goes up against Sahith Theegala. If the cup comes down to the final three matches things will get interesting. Adam Scott takes on Collin Morikawa in match 10 before the penultimate games see Christiaan Bezuidenhout meeting Brian Harman and the last game of the week has Mackenzie Hughes facing Max Homa.
Betting
I’ll go with three bets for singles Sunday with the first of them on Russell Henley to get the better of Sungjae Im. Henley has had the luxury of the company of Scottie Scheffler in the tournament so far but really the world number one has been quite quiet so far so Henley should be feeling good about himself. Im was absolutely terrible on the opening day of the tournament and while he has improved since then he has played every session and that might make a difference. Henley sat out the Saturday morning action so he should be much fresher and with a solid tee to green game and good form on the greens I think he wins an American point here.
Si Woo Kim has statistically been the best player in the field this week and the Korean has clearly been fired up and he’ll be keen to get his point on the board for his side against a Keegan Bradley who is sure to add to the fireworks in what will be a competitive and I dare say at times feisty match. I guess the issue in this one will be the streaky nature of the Bradley putter. If he doesn’t hole much then this could get away from him fast against a guy who is doing nothing wrong this week and who has all sorts of fire in his belly. Si Woo has really come into his own this week and I like him to finish off with a win.
I was hoping Max Homa would be involved in a potentially more competitive match than he might be right down the bottom of the singles draw but I still have to take him on. The positive is that he meets a Canadian player in Mackenzie Hughes who whatever the situation in the overall competition is he will want to finish a home Presidents Cup with a win. If this match has meaning to it then the crowd will be right behind Hughes and if it doesn’t motivation is still there with the Canadian against the player in the worst form of all the Americans heading in and who hasn’t exactly fired up in the two foursomes matches he has played. I think the Internationals hold more than an edge in the closer.
