We have had a look at the Rothesay County Championship Division One season ahead of the start on Friday and there is enough time to have a look at the second division before the first ball is bowled and this looks very competitive.
Sussex were the champions of this division last season but eight teams will line up primarily looking for one of the two promotion spots into the top flight but then it will be all able winning the title and claiming some silverware.

The Format
This is a usual eight team division where all of the teams will go up against the other seven home and away. At the end of the season the top two will be promoted to Division One for next season. The points system is 16 for a win, eight for a draw or tie and nothing for losing. There is no second phase to this season so the team who has the most points after 14 matches wins the title with the runner-up also being promoted.
The bonus system is the same as last year though. As ever there are first innings bonus points too with points scored for getting 250, 300, 350, 400 and 450 in the first 110 overs. Bonus points are also available for 3, 6 and 9 wickets, providing a maximum of eight possible bonus points in total. In keeping with Test cricket the new ball is available to teams after 80 overs as it was last season rather than the 90 overs it was prior to the pandemic.

Outright Betting
This is a really interesting division because you can pick holes in a lot of the teams. I’m no Dale Benkenstein fan so that is me out where Lancashire are concerned and I’m a little worried about the bowling for Kent while Middlesex have the pitches at Lord’s to contend with. I’ve still got those down as the top three in the division just on individual match winning class alone but I don’t think there will be much between the top five this season. Middlesex might need to come from behind when Kane Williamson arrives so I’m going to take a team who have front loaded their squad in Gloucestershire.
Gloucestershire have to wait a week for their overseas pair of Cameron Bancroft and Cameron Green to arrive but they have Derbyshire in the opening game so you wouldn’t think they would miss them too much. There is a spritely batting unit forming at Bristol but a seriously good pace attack being built and against a Derbyshire side who do look the weakest side in the division. Green could do some damage in the five matches he is around for and then if the young quicks can find their range there is no reason why Gloucestershire can’t outperform their price. I don’t think much will separate the top five but at 22/1 Gloucestershire are comfortably the biggest price and an each way bet could be rewarded.
