Royal Ascot 2019 – Day 4 – Rest of the Card Tips and Betting Previews plus Placepot Picks

We have previewed the best of the penultimate day of racing at Royal Ascot on Friday and now it is time to have a look at the other three races on the card, the handicaps and Listed offerings. As with any Royal Ascot race they look competitive affairs but we have found value in two of them and then there is our fourth attempt at landing a decent win on the placepot.

2.30 Royal Ascot: Albany Stakes

Favourites

The opener is a 6 furlong Group 2 for 2 year old fillies where 25 runners will be spread across the track.

A middle to high draw is preferred and we have that for the favourite Daahyeh out of the Roger Varian yard.   She looks a worthy favourite based on her debut win when just holding off Raffle Prize who won the Queen Mary earlier this week.

American trainer Wesley Ward runs two including 2nd favourite Nayibeth.  However, she’s drawn in stall 1 and, generally, his string need fast ground so conditions might not suit.  He actually withdrew one of his runners on Thursday, Maven, on account of the ground.

Betting

The only other filly currently priced in single figures in our selection, Last Surprise.   She’s from the same connections that landed the Norfolk Stakes with trainer Simon Crisford already in excellent form with his juveniles this year.   The assistance of Frankie Dettori who landed a Thursday 4-timer is a positive.

She won her only start on the all weather at Lingfield where she showed a good attitude to win a duel with a twice raced Godolphin hotpot before coming clear in the final furlong by over 3 lengths, the pair a further 4 lengths clear of the 3rd horse.

Her trainer thinks there’s untapped potential and with her landing a good draw in stall 19, I’m expecting her to go close.

Tips

Back Last Surprise (e/w) for a 1/10 stake at 9.00 Coral BOG (⅕ odds 1-5)

5.00 Royal Ascot: Sandringham Stakes Handicap

The only race of Day 4 where a bet isn’t recommended, this is a 3 year old fillies handicap with a big field of 27.

These races are tough to figure out and this one has the added complication that so many are very lightly raced, many not having progressed out of novice company.

The two I’d put up for the placepot would be Hotsy Totsy and Lady Madison, both of whom won last time out, are racing for the first time in a handicap and have mid to high draw.

5.35 Royal Ascot: Duke Of Edinburgh Stakes Handicap

Favourites

To finish, we have a Class 2 handicap over a mile and a half with a decent sized field of 19.  No horse older than 5 years old has won in the last 10 years whilst 6 of the last 7 winners have come from the first 3 in the market.

This year looks no different with the front 3 appearing to be very solid indeed.  Last year’s 1-2 from the King George V handicap reoppose with Baghdad bidding to hold off Corgi again.  The former was injured after that win and didn’t race again until April when running creditably on the all weather at Newcastle.  He then won a Class 2 handicap at Newmarket and has been raised a relatively lenient looking 4lbs.  He’s sure to go well.

Corgi meanwhile is 3lb better off on the run from last year but comes here having only finished 3rd in a big handicap at York.  He’s as consistent as they come and will go well but I’m a little worried by his liking for fast conditions.

Betting

In front of Corgi at York is our selection, Fujaira Prince.  He was over 2 lengths in front of Corgi and is now only 3lb worse off so he should, in theory, confirm the form.  What impressed me with the selection that day was how he stayed on stoutly after hitting the front coming clear with a Group horse in the making, First Eleven.  Yes he was edged out but it was a head bobber so I’ve no concerns over his battling qualities.

Previous to that run, he’d won 3 on the spin.  In fact, he’s only seen the track 5 times despite being a 5 year old, his other run when edged out on debut.  He still looks to be improving and being out of Pivotal is the one most likely to appreciate any ease still in the ground.

Tips

PLACED – Back Fujaira Prince (e/w) for a 1.5/10 stake at 7.50 Coral BOG (⅕ odds 1-5)
