SA20 2023 – Joburg Super Kings vs Paarl Royals Tips and Betting Preview

The SA20 season continues with a double header on Friday with the action beginning in Johannesburg when The Wanderers plays host to the match between the Johannesburg Super Kings and the Paarl Royals.

These two teams resumed their campaign in the top four and will be looking to remain there over the next week or so. This is probably a bigger match for the Royals than the Super Kings as they have played a match more than their opponents.

Johannesburg Super Kings

The Super Giants come out of the break in fourth place in the table but just one point off second spot with a game in hand of the two teams who are immediately above them. One of those teams are the Paarl Royals so a win for Johannesburg here would put them in a brilliant position to make the semi-finals. Defeat won’t be catastrophic but it would probably leave them needing to win their last two matches to make progress.

The break probably came at the wrong time for the Super Kings as they had won three of their last four matches going into it and now need to regather and look to pick up where they left off. The positive for Johannesburg is that they have won both of their home matches so far and their last three regular season outings are at home. They have lost Alzarri Joseph to international duty so their remaining bowlers are going to need to step up in his absence.

Paarl Royals

When the tournament started the Paarl Royals were expected to cruise into the semi-finals. They are still in position to make it through to the last four but they won’t want to lose this match because it might take their destiny out of their own hands. They know that if they win their two remaining matches they will be into the semi-finals. We probably haven’t seen the best of the Royals but I suspect they are going to enjoy being on the road for their last two games.

The wicket at Boland Park never really suited the big hitting batters they have in their team and it wasn’t like it was much better for the bowlers either. The break probably came at the wrong time for the Paarl outfit too because they had won their last two matches going into it and looked like they were just getting into a groove. The positive for them is that their eye catching English pair Jason Roy and Jos Buttler and captain David Miller all scored big runs in the ODI series while they were away.

Key Players

Faf du Plessis smashed the only century in this competition so far shortly prior to the break for the ODI series. He will have Matthew Wade reinforcing the batting alongside him but the Super Kings need another big knock at the top from their skipper.

This ground is nowhere near big enough to contain Jos Buttler and if he can get himself in and get a start then 48 hours after smashing the South Africa attack to all parts he could be very destructive on a venue where the boundaries are within reach for a Buttler mishit let along a clean hit.

Betting

I’ve taken the sixes in the previous two matches on this ground this season and I’m not seeing a reason not to take them here. Reeza Hendricks has been the problem with the bat for the Joburg Super Kings this season but he found some form in the ODIs recently so I’m expecting him to deliver the Super Kings to a decent score and the six hitting potential with these two sides on a postage stamp sized ground which is at altitude is there for all to see.

If we just go into the batters we have Faf du Plessis, Leus du Plooy, Donovan Ferreira, Jason Roy, Jos Buttler, Eoin Morgan and David Miller who are renowned hitters of the cricket ball. Then when you throw into the mix that the home side are without their leading wicket taker Aaron Phangiso and their overseas star Alzarri Joseph there isn’t much to keep the Royals in check other than Maheesh Theekshana. We’ve seen all season that the Paarl attack can go the course and distance so I would be very surprised if there isn’t a dozen sixes but I’ll keep stakes to a normal one because there is some rain around.
