SA20 2023 – MI Cape Town vs Durban Super Giants Tips and Betting Preview

The double header in the SA20 tournament on Friday concludes with a clash between the MI Cape Town team and the Durban Super Giants in the second offering of the competition from the picturesque Newlands ground.

Cape Town got off to a winning start in the competition in the first match of it while the Super Giants came up short in their first game. They will be looking to get off the mark for the season with the home side looking to take up the early running.

MI Cape Town

There was a lot to like about the MI Cape Town team in that opening match. I think the Paarl Royals are going to be a dangerous team in the competition but Cape Town dealt with them ruthlessly. They were in control of the match from start to finish and were so dominant in it that they didn’t just win but they picked up the only bonus point victory from the opening set of games to set them on their way nicely.

The good thing from a Cape Town point of view is there is even more to come from them because they were able to sit Kagiso Rabada out of that opening match and still win with plenty in hand. There was also batting to come should they have needed it so as far as opening matches and laying markers down go, MI Cape Town couldn’t really have done much more than they did. They need to make sure they hit those standards again.

Durban Super Giants

The Durban Super Giants looked to be doing a good job on the Johannesburg Super Kings in their opening match when they had them reduced to 27-4 but unlike MI Cape Town they were not able to keep the hammer down and in the end they turned into a bit of a rabble with the ball. That can happen in the first game of a tournament but the way the quality of bowling fell apart when two batters went after them is a concern.

The lack of a quality death bowler was evident in that match which left them chasing 190 rather than a score around the 140 mark. To the credit of the Super Giants, they got themselves into a winning position with the bat in hand but then when the death overs came along they were found wanting again. There is no need for the Super Giants to panic just yet but they need to play the last five overs in both innings so much better.

Key Players

Dewald Brevis announced himself to the tournament in that opening game with a blistering innings. It helped that he knew that the target MI Cape Town were chasing was below par but hitting like that is special to watch. All eyes will be on him to see if a repeat comes along.

Quinton de Kock also made a good start to the tournament and that might be even more important for the Durban Super Giants given that he is their captain. He’ll need to go well here though because this Cape Town new ball attack is a serious one.

Betting

I thought the pitch at Newlands played much better in the opening game than I expected it to and given how the competition has started with an emphasis clearly on entertainment and exciting cricket I see no reason why the sixes won’t continue to flow between two teams who have no shortage of six hitters. One thing we do know about Newlands is that the boundaries aren’t big so when the pitch is good for batting it is not a place for the bowlers.

We saw a dozen sixes in what wasn’t the highest scoring match of all time in the first game here on Tuesday but both of these teams batted well in their first game. The sixes line for this one is only 10.5 and while there are a couple of gun bowlers for the MI Cape Town team, if the Durban Super Giants can negotiate those overs they should be able to make hay on the others. There isn’t much in the Durban attack to worry MICT so I think the over is a good thing here.
