SA20 2023 – MI Cape Town vs Pretoria Capitals Tips and Betting Preview

The penultimate day of action in the SA20 competition before the international break comes along on Monday where we have one match taking place as two of the better teams meet when MI Cape Town face the Pretoria Capitals.

These two teams could very well be in the final of this inaugural season of the competition next month but they still have work to do to get there. Cape Town have moved themselves up to third in the table going into this one, while Pretoria remain top of the pile.

MI Cape Town

This has been a much more inconsistent season for the MI Cape Town team than I think most would have expected when you look down their depth chart. Those expectations immediately grew when they destroyed the Paarl Royals in the opening game of the tournament but they have only won two of the five matches they have played since then and are in a right good tussle with two other teams to make it into the top four. A win here with a bonus point could send them up to second.

I think more would have been expected of MI Cape Town with the bat. Newlands isn’t always the easiest place to bat and some of the pitches in this tournament have been impacted by the heatwave passing through South Africa but you would still have expected more than one score of over 160 in six matches from a team with the batters they have. Thankfully for them their bowlers have been able to win them three games but things would be much easier if they started batting well.

Pretoria Capitals

The Pretoria Capitals have set the pace right from the off this season and have generally looked one of the better teams in the competition, if not the best, however the last few days they have started to unravel a little having lost two of their last four matches. They will be looking for a win here as much to put any doubts to bed as anything else. A win here would move them at least 10 points clear of fifth place and looking good to make the knockout stages.

If there is a concern for the Pretoria Capitals so far this season it is that their bowlers have conceded 160 or more in four of their six matches. The caveat to that is that they play on a ground where scoring runs is almost automatic but even so they would like to tighten up a touch. They have a very powerful batting unit like you need to have when SuperSport Park is your home ground and these boundaries may not be big enough to contain them.

Key Players

We haven’t really seen the best of Sam Curran in this tournament. The MI Cape Town all-rounder was the Player of the Tournament at the T20 World Cup at the end of last year and the home side would want that form from him here.

Anrich Nortje is having a very good tournament for the Pretoria Capitals. He has 10 wickets from his six matches and if he can get stuck into the MI Cape Town top order early doors then he could open the game up for the leaders.

Betting

We know the boundaries at Newlands are not the biggest and there are certainly some big hitters in these two sides to suggest that we could see a number of sixes in this match. The sixes line for this match is down at 10.5 which has been covered in three of the four matches which have been played on this ground. The one match which didn’t cover involved the Johannesburg Super Kings who have been pretty ordinary with the bat this season and was the second game in as many days.

That isn’t the case here. Pretoria bring a powerful and functioning batting unit to this part of the world which means that we have the likes of Dewald Brevis, Grant Roelofsen, Rassie van der Dussen, George Linde, Odean Smith, Will Jacks, Rilee Rossouw and Jimmy Neesham all potentially clobbering sixes for us here. There hasn’t been a match in Cape Town for five days and this is the last one here in the tournament so I would imagine they will want to put on a show. The Women’s T20 World Cup is here in a couple of weeks so we might even be on the end of the square for this one so there is plenty to suggest over 10.5 sixes will land.
