SA20 2023 – Paarl Royals vs Sunrisers Eastern Cape Tips and Betting Preview

We are closing in on the halfway mark in the SA20 competition and we head closer there on Thursday when one match takes place as the Paarl Royals go up against the Sunrisers Eastern Cape at Boland Park.

Both these teams have two wins from their four matches and one of them will escape what is becoming quite a jam in behind the Pretoria Capitals with a win here. With some star acts on show this should be another competitive match.

Paarl Royals

The Paarl Royals started their campaign with a pair of wins and a pair of losses but thankfully for them the wins have been much more emphatic than the defeats. One of those wins was so big that it earned them a bonus point and that is why they go into this match second in the standings. There has been a sequence to the Royals’ results which has gone loss, win, loss, win so clearly they will be hoping that changes in this game.

Paarl have won both of their home matches to date so that might well be significant here. The key thing in both of those outings is that their bowling delivered the goods on their own patch. That is important because on paper at least it looks comfortably the weakest part of their game. In the main their batting has gone well in the tournament but might still be more to come from elite players such as Jos Buttler and David Miller such is their class.

Sunrisers Eastern Cape

The Sunrisers Eastern Cape also have a couple of wins and a couple of defeats on their ledger this season. Their defeats came in the opening two matches while their wins have come in their last two. They will know they got out of jail in their last game when Marco Jansen went ballistic to recover a dire looking situation and turn it into a win. That won’t happen every game so they need their batters to make sure they come to the party.

That top order is becoming a bit of a concern and it would relax everyone if they can put in a solid performance but in the main you would have to say the Sunrisers look in a decent shape. Their two losses came against the Pretoria Capitals and it already looks like a positive that they have got the matches against them out of the way. If they can win here then they will be very nicely positioned heading into the second half of the campaign.

Key Players

Jos Buttler could be the key to success for the Paarl Royals in this match. He has scored runs this season but we haven’t really seen that devastating brutal clean hitting he is famous for. That will come to the party soon and when it does his teams win so the Royals will hope it is here.

We haven’t really seen Aiden Markram go very big with the bat in this tournament yet but batting at four is going to give some good days and some bad ones. He has delivered with the ball though and if he can take some scalps here and bat well the Eastern Cape should have every chance.

Betting

Depending on where you shop around for this match you can get a sixes line as low as 9.5 or as high as 11.5. I think that low line is a little too low. Although this isn’t the highest scoring ground in the world or has the best pitch going around, there were 11 sixes in the last game here in a match where Jason Roy, Eoin Morgan and Quinton de Kock, three regular hitters of sixes, scored five runs between them in their three innings.

Another reason why I like the over here is because neither bowling attack is massively imposing and with this being the third match on this ground I suspect we’ll be on a different wicket which might even have a short boundary somewhere. Paarl Royals are laced with big hitters but there are enough in the Sunrisers for them to contribute to the cause as well. There aren’t many franchise matches where I wouldn’t take over 9.5 sixes apart from the obvious big grounds such as the Ageas Bowl or the MCG. This isn’t one of those so I’ll play the over.
