Sky Bet Championship 2022-23 – Wednesday 31st August Matches Tips, TV and Betting Preview

The midweek action in the Sky Bet Championship concludes on Wednesday evening when the final five matches take place over the course of a night in which a number of teams could move up plenty of places in the league table.

As with Tuesday evening, there is one TV match for us to enjoy over the course of the night but unless you are going to one of the other four games the only way to watch those is to pay the home club £10 for live streaming.

Wednesday’s fixtures are as follows: (7.45pm unless stated; UK TV in brackets)

Bristol City v Huddersfield Town

Coventry City v Preston North End

Stoke City v Swansea City

Sunderland v Rotherham United

Blackpool v Blackburn Rovers (8pm – Sky Main Event & Sky Football)

Preview

The televised action centres around Lancashire where Blackpool look to build on an up and down start to the season when they entertain a Blackburn side who flew out of the traps this term only to fall off a cliff in the last couple of weeks. Surprisingly it is Rotherham United who are the highest placed team on show on Wednesday evening. They have made a great start back to life in the Championship and head to the Stadium of Light to take on a Sunderland side potentially reeling from the departure of Alex Neil.

Three other matches take place over the course of the evening and Neil will be in charge of his new team Stoke City for the first time in one of them. That sees the Potters hosting a Swansea City who are in the bottom three at kick off and clearly need to arrest their poor form. Bristol City have begun the season positively and they host second from bottom Huddersfield at Ashton Gate while in a shock turn of events rock bottom Coventry City are finally scheduled to play a home match. They host goalless draw specialists Preston North End.

Betting

I’ll go with one bet which I’ll hopefully add to the two winners we picked up on Tuesday. That comes at Ashton Gate where Bristol City host Huddersfield Town in a match I sense the home side will win but where I prefer goals to come along fairly regularly. Bristol City have gone well at home this season, scoring twice in each of their three matches, but we saw at the weekend at Blackpool and indeed when Sunderland were here earlier in the season that there can be a fragility to them defensively.

I’m not the biggest fan of the Terriers this term and I’m certainly not surprised that they are second from bottom going into this match but they showed against West Brom at the weekend and at Norwich prior to that they have goals in them and that should be enough to keep Bristol City honest in this one. Bristol City like to get on the front foot and go forward when they are at home and Huddersfield will look to set plays and the counterattack for their chances so these two should combine for much more of the same which saw five goals on this ground between the two last season.
