Sky Bet Championship 2024-25 – Luton vs Plymouth Argyle Tips, TV and Betting Preview

We are still at the stage of the campaign where the Sky Bet Championship are catching up with rearranged matches and we have one of those on Wednesday night when the bottom two face off as Luton Town host Plymouth Argyle at Kenilworth Road.

The six pointer klaxon will be sounding loud around this game with the winners giving their survival hopes a massive boost and the losers wondering if there is a way out of the trouble they have got themselves into. Plenty is on the line here.

Where to watch

The game will be shown live and in full on the Sky Sports+ channel with the short build-up beginning at 7.35pm ahead of the 7.45pm kick off.

Luton Town

After relegation from the Premier League last season, Luton Town are now staring down the barrel of falling through successive trap doors. Amazingly given the positive efforts they showed when mixing it with the big boys last term, the Hatters go into this match bottom of the Championship table and even a win here would only move them level with the team above the drop zone but still behind them on goal difference. You would think that victory is paramount for the Bedfordshire side here.

The big problem for Luton is they have disposed of the services of Rob Edwards and employed Matt Bloomfield to lead them away from danger but they have had absolutely no new manager bounce, largely because of an inability to score goals, especially at home where in four matches in 2025 they are yet to register a goal. That simply has to change and change quickly if the Hatters are to preserve their Championship status. Even clean sheets, which have also been hard to come by, would only get them so far now.

Plymouth Argyle

Unlike at Luton, there have been signs of life with Plymouth Argyle in recent weeks. They had picked up in terms of their showings at least prior to seeing off Liverpool in the cup last weekend but they used the feelgood factor and momentum from that match to absolutely batter Millwall last week but might just have seen some of that dissipate when they lost at Blackburn at the weekend. Nevertheless, a win here would still take them out of the relegation zone for the first time in quite a while.

In order for them to pick up that win they would need to achieve their first away victory of the season. That highlights that their away form is bad enough but when you consider that in 16 road trips they have managed just five goals, bad probably doesn’t do it justice. There undoubtedly has been an improvement since the January window but that is yet to play out away from Home Park. It is going to have to sooner or later if the Pilgrims are to remain a Championship side.

Team News

Luton Town boss Matt Bloomfield has confirmed that his squad have no fresh injuries after the defeat to Sheffield United at the weekend. Reece Burke is back in training but the game comes too soon for him while Jordan Clark and Tahith Chong are both out.

Miron Muslic has hinted that in form striker Ryan Hardie will be forced to miss this match with the injury that he sustained in Blackburn at the weekend. It is expected that the Plymouth boss will have Michael Obafemi back to counter that though.

Betting

This is an extremely hard game to bet on. There is absolutely no form on the Luton side at all whereas if you wanted to oppose the Hatters you would be doing it with a team who are yet to win on their travels and who have scored just five away goals in 16 games. Admittedly, the outlook is a little more positive for Plymouth Argyle under Miron Muslic but he has managed two away games and Plymouth have conceded twice in both without winning.

I’m not going to get involved in the match betting but there is a weakness at left-back for Plymouth Argyle, and has been for much of the season, and I fancy Isaiah Jones to be able to take advantage of that. The Hatters’ speedster registered a shot on target in a similar situation against Sheffield United at the weekend and Luton will look to get him in the game to go at his man as much as possible. In the reverse meeting, Victor Moses scored Luton’s goal from the right side which is where Jones will be utilised here and that could lead to the 7/4 on the former Middlesbrough man to have a shot on target to land. Jones averages 0.52 shots on target per 90 minutes this season but will attack in this Luton formation. That price looks big.
