Sky Bet Championship 2024-25 – Sheffield United vs Hull City Tips, TV and Betting Preview

The third round of matches in the Sky Bet Championship this week begins on Friday night when two teams at either end of the table meet in a huge clash for both when Sheffield United welcome Hull City to Bramall Lane.

Sheffield United have the chance to move to the top of the table on Friday evening but could put five points between them and third placed Burnley while Hull City will be looking to come out of the bottom three and pile the pressure on those around them when they play on Saturday.

Where to watch

The match will be shown live and in full on the Sky Sports Main Event and Sky Sports Football channels with the build-up beginning at 7.30pm with the kick off in South Yorkshire at 8pm.

Sheffield United

Considering where they were at the end of last season, to be where they are this term, Sheffield United deserve a lot of credit. Even though they were a Premier League team a year ago, such was how abysmal they were in that division they were written off going into this campaign but they sit second in the table as we approach the final third of the season and in position to launch a real tilt at an immediate return to the top flight.

The incredible thing about this turnaround is how they have gone from leaking like a sieve to being one of the best defensive teams in the Championship. No team have kept more clean sheets at home in the second tier this term and they will be hoping for another here. That hasn’t come at a detriment to their attacking play like it so often does and that is the reason for why the Blades are flying so high. They need to maintain that defensive record for what is likely to be a frantic final third of the season.

Hull City

When you consider that Hull City only missed out on the playoffs in the final weeks of the season last term, to be where they are at present in the Championship table represents a bit of a head loss. It always looked a ridiculous decision to part with the services of Liam Rosenior and the evidence is growing for that to be the case. They are already on the successor to his successor and that is a further indication that things haven’t gone to plan for the Tigers.

Hull are beginning to show signs of life under Ruben Selles though. He has been in this situation before with Reading so he won’t panic and the Humberside outfit have won three and picked up a draw in their last seven matches. They will have been disappointed to lose to QPR in midweek but to be fair to them QPR are flying at the minute. Hull have been busy in the transfer market and will want to see some of the fruits of that labour here.

Team News

Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder has confirmed that Tom Davies and Kieffer Moore will miss this match but he could have Vini Souza and Jesurun Rak-Sakyi available, although neither are fit to play the full 90 minutes.

Ruben Selles will be without his captain Lewie Coyle for this match but he has confirmed that Abu Kamara will be available should he choose to select him. The match comes too soon for Kasey Palmer and Charlie Hughes however.

Betting

Sheffield United have been excellent at home this season but they have just started to concede more goals than they were earlier in the campaign and that doesn’t surprise me because the injury to Harry Souttar has left them fielding a similar defence to the one which was penetrated regularly in the Premier League last season. The Blades have only kept one clean sheet in their last six matches and that makes me think that rather than back them to win, both teams to score is the bet here.

Ruben Selles has signed some offensive threats in the transfer window and as a result his side have scored in seven of their last nine, but have just lost on loan goalkeeper Carl Rushworth back to his parent club and the solidity of Lewie Coyle is missing here so Hull might have to adopt a fight fire with fire approach to this one. Sheffield United are a lot more attackable than before the Souttar injury, particularly with Vini Souza also working his way back to fitness but it is hard to see Hull keeping this Sheffield United side out so the even money on both teams to score looks good here.
