Preview
The main TV cameras head to Bramall Lane on Tuesday evening for what is a huge night at the top of the table where Sheffield United have the chance to move above Leeds United at the summit when they entertain Bristol City. The Blades will go top for 24 hours at least if they win the match but Bristol City are only one spot outside the play-offs and will be keen to win themselves. Should Sheffield United slip up then it could be Burnley who end the night on top spot if they can see off sixth placed West Brom at Turf Moor. Sunderland are the other team in the automatic promotion race and they will know they have to keep winning to remain in the hunt. They will be looking for three more points when they entertain Preston North End.
The other team in the top six are Coventry City and they will be looking for a tenth win in 11 when they make the short trip to take on Derby County at Pride Park. There is also a huge match at the bottom of the table where Cardiff City, one spot above the relegation zone, host a Luton Town side who are second bottom and really need to win to give their survival hopes a boost. The other two matches are generally mid-table contests when Norwich City host Sheffield Wednesday while Middlesbrough take on QPR up at the Riverside.
Betting
There are two bets that I like the look of on Tuesday evening with the first of those coming in the form of Sunderland to beat Preston North End. Sunderland know that if they are not in the last chance saloon, they aren’t far away from it and have to keep winning, especially home games and the schedule for this one has gone with them too with this being their second home match in three days whereas Preston have had to go to Sheffield and now this one. Preston head to the Stadium of Light without a win in five in the Championship and they have only scored two goals in that time. Preston are perfectly safe but aren’t going to go up and with an FA Cup quarter final on the horizon it stands to reason that they could be there for the taking here. Sunderland probably aren’t quite as on it as they were a few weeks ago because a couple of injuries are hindering them but they still have enough quality to get the job done but maybe not run up the score. I was at the Stadium of Light four weeks ago for a midweek match and Sunderland were 2-0 up early in the second half and took their foot off the gas and with a huge clash with Coventry at the weekend I foresee something similar here so I’ll take Sunderland to win the match but bump up the price and add under 4.5 goals to the bet.
The other bet I like is on the aforementioned Coventry City who should be good enough to take advantage of lowly Derby County. Derby got their first win under John Eustace at the weekend but they beat an inconsistent Blackburn in a match which was elevated before of the switch between the clubs of Eustace. Coventry aren’t inconsistent. They have won nine of their last 10 matches and are flying under Frank Lampard and what I like about the Sky Blues is they have a deep enough squad to rotate in the key areas of the pitch without weakening their side too much. Derby don’t have that luxury. They are said to be missing 10 players for this clash including recent signings Lars-Jorgen Salvesen and Kemar Roofe. Derby put in a huge effort against Blackburn but that was their first win in 13 Championship matches. The form of these two and the squad depth are completely opposite to each other so I’ll take Coventry here but as ever in these big Championship weeks I’ll take the draw cover that is on offer.
