The Sky Bet League 1 weekend gets underway on Thursday night this week when two sides at opposite ends of the table meet at London Road when lowly Peterborough United host the leaders Stockport County.
Peterborough find themselves at the wrong end of the table while Stockport are exactly where they want to be at the top of it so it will be interesting to see if this one follows the standings or whether there is a shock taking place.
Where to watch
The match will be shown live and in full on the Sky Sports Main Event and Sky Sports Football channels with the build-up beginning at 7.30pm ahead of the 8pm kick off in Cambridgeshire.
Peterborough United
After a really poor season last term apart from their win in the Vertu Trophy, much more was expected of Peterborough United this time around as generally at this level they are a side who are always in and around the top six. That certainly isn’t how it has started though. Whether the Darren Ferguson reign had just gone stale and it needed a change only those inside the dressing room will know but they have looked better since he was dismissed and Luke Williams came in as a replacement.
That might just be a new manager bounce but they will be hoping that the rise in momentum continues here. Peterborough were emphatic 5-0 winners over a good going AFC Wimbledon side last time out so there is no doubt that Williams is getting a tune out of his charges and a team that historically likes to play fast, free flowing, attacking football, certainly has the manager to deliver that and so Posh will be expecting to climb the table in the coming weeks.

Stockport County
After agonisingly missing out on a spot at Wembley last season, Stockport County have made their way to the summit of the division this time around and their intentions from here on in will be very obvious. They will be looking to avoid the shootout of the play-offs and ensuring that they exit the division as one of the two best teams in it and a third of the way into the campaign they are nicely positioned to do that and a win here will extend their lead at the top.
One thing that we are going to find out about the Hatters in the next few weeks is what their squad depth is like. They are beginning to run into injuries and suspensions but having not had a match last weekend those who are available will at least be fresh for them. No team in League 1 have picked up more points away from home than Stockport and having won their last three road games they will be arriving at London Road with their confidence high.
Betting
I like the thought of goals in this match and I’m a little surprised that we can get a fair price on over 2.5 of them. There is no doubt that Peterborough United are looking better going forward under Luke Williams but the Welshman isn’t renowned for his teams being tight defensively and this front three of Stockport have the potential to climb all over that. The leaders are having issues at the back though with injuries and suspensions beginning to bite them hard.
Four of the last five Peterborough United matches have had over 2.5 goals in them in League 1 and with the position that they are in draws aren’t really going to be what they are looking for at home. Stockport will be keen to get back on track after a defeat to Luton last time out so I’m expecting to see an entertaining match. When Luton got the ball down against this Stockport side they opened them up quite easily and Peterborough will be looking to do similar but the threat Stockport carry should make this a contest which has at least three goals if not more.
