There it one match left in Skybet League Two this weekend and it is one of the biggest matches of the season as the leaders Doncaster Rovers host the second placed side Plymouth Argyle in front of the Sky Sports cameras.
Doncaster head into the match with a six point lead over Plymouth with both sides keeping an eye on fourth placed Stevenage in the race for promotion but the result of this one could well determine who wins the title.
Doncaster Rovers
It is surely only a matter of time before Doncaster’s return to League One is confirmed and given the position they are in I’m sure they have one eye on the title too. Doncaster are two wins away from being confirmed as a League One side again next season which is a decent effort from all concerned at the Keepmoat given that they only came down last year.
One of the reasons for Doncaster’s success has been their home form. Nobody has left the Keepmoat with three points yet in the league this season and only six sides have drawn here from 19 opponents. The goals of John Marquis and Tommy Rowe have kept Doncaster on track for an immediate return to the next level.
Plymouth Argyle
Second placed Plymouth Argyle have maintained a promotion challenge this season which after the heartache of the last two campaigns has to be admired. You would have to accept that they have had some wobbles along the way but I guess that is only natural at times but they have come out the other side now.
Argyle go into this match with one defeat in their last five matches which came in that weird home match with Blackpool when Derek Adams went mad and got his side to change kit as a supposed good luck measure. Away from home things haven’t been an issue. Plymouth are the best away side in the league with 36pts from 18.
Team News
Doncaster manager Darren Ferguson has confirmed that goalkeeper Ian Lawlor will be fit for this match and Rovers could also have defender Luke McCullough back for the match as well.
Plymouth boss Derek Adams will have to decide whether to start with striker Ryan Taylor after the former Oxford forward was on the bench after returning from injury last time out. Gary Sawyer could also return.
Betting
The best home side in the division meet the best away side so something has to give in this match but to my mind Doncaster are just a little short at odds on. I would say that they are the best side I’ve seen in the division this season and were this to come down to a battle of the managers then I would favour Doncaster but I’m keen to take them on because this isn’t a match they need to win.
A win isn’t vital for Plymouth but they can put significant distance between themselves and Stevenage in fourth if they bag the three points here but in fairness a draw probably suits the need of both even if it doesn’t take Plymouth closer to Doncaster and a potential title.
After two horror misses Plymouth will probably just want to go up with the title a mere bonus and if they avoid defeat here they will take a giant step towards promotion. I expect them to come away with a result in a game that has plenty of draw potential on it.
