Skybet League 2 – Saturday 20th August Matches Betting Preview

All 24 sides in Skybet League 2 are back in action on Saturday for the fifth time in two weeks and heaven only knows what shape some of these sides will be in given the brutal nature of the beginning of the campaign.

The table is already taking shape and it is a sign of both how open the league is and the nature of the schedule that just three league games into the season nobody has a 100% record and only one side remains pointless heading into Saturday.

Saturday’s fixtures are as follows:

Accrington v Exeter

Blackpool v Wycombe

Cambridge v Carlisle

Cheltenham v Doncaster

Crawley v Barnet

Grimsby v Leyton Orient

Hartlepool v Notts County

Newport v Crewe

Plymouth v Mansfield

Portsmouth v Colchester

Stevenage v Luton

Yeovil v Morecambe

Big Matches

Leaders Luton head to Stevenage for what is billed in some places as a local derby although from a Luton point of view it is nothing of the sort, it is merely a match which doesn’t involve too much travelling. Colchester in second head to Portsmouth in what is probably the biggest match of the day while Plymouth vs Mansfield is another key game.

Best of the Rest

Crawley and Barnet have both begun the season well and they meet in Sussex while the Blackpool vs Wycombe and Cambridge vs Carlisle matches both involve two sides who expect to be competitive at the business end of the table come the end of the season. Bottom placed Exeter will be looking to get off the mark for the campaign when they head to Accrington.

Betting

As you can tell from my opening I’m not going to go mad in this round of matches. There is just too much guesswork involved not least because we are still early in the season and teams are still finding their way but I am conscious of the workload involved. Normally I don’t really care for that given that these are professional athletes but even then five matches in 15 days is a tough slog.

The only bet I’m interested in is on a Crawley side who served me well on Tuesday night when they won at Exeter. They now take on a Barnet team who are notoriously bad on the road and who have suffered the blow of losing Michael Gash for the entire season. While Shaun Batt is a capable replacement it is never easy losing such a key player.

In terms of depth you wouldn’t say either of these are blessed with it so there might not be an advantage either way but Crawley have no travelling to do, they are nowhere near as bad as their pre-season outlook predicted and generally they go well on their own patch. I’d have them marginal favourites here not marginal outsiders so I’ll take them on the Asian lines.
