There are eight matches left in Skybet League 2 and for the majority of the division the first of those comes on Saturday when 22 sides take to the pitch for another game in the league. Things are beginning to become clearer in the race for things that mean something and there is a good chance this weekend will further highlight who is going to do what. The top two don’t play until Sunday but everyone else is in action.
Saturday’s fixtures are as follows:
Accrington Stanley v Grimsby Town
Barnet v Cheltenham Town
Blackpool v Hartlepool United
Cambridge United v Stevenage
Carlisle United v Crewe Alexandra
Colchester United v Luton Town
Crawley Town v Leyton Orient
Exeter City v Yeovil Town
Morecambe v Mansfield Town
Portsmouth v Newport County
Wycombe Wanderers v Notts County
Big Matches
The big match of the week comes on Sunday but in terms of Saturday there is a huge match for both sides at Fratton Park when promotion chasing Portsmouth host relegation threatened Newport while Stevenage in fourth will look to keep up with Portsmouth when they head to Cambridge. Two playoff chasers meet when Colchester host Luton and their 2000 fans.
Best of the Rest
Exeter and Carlisle will both look to remain in the playoff picture when they host Yeovil and Crewe respectively while Blackpool welcome Hartlepool to Bloomfield Road looking to do the same. At the other end of the table Leyton Orient are nearing must win territory when they make the short trip to Crawley.
Betting
Three bets catch my eye this weekend and hopefully after a good recent run we can take advantage of them here. The first bet is on one of the form sides in the division which is Blackpool.
They are unbeaten in eight matches and have won four of their last five with the draw in amongst that coming at Wycombe when they had a goal not given and missed a penalty so Blackpool are bang on it right now. Hartlepool are no great shakes and have shipped the third most in the division. They are the worst side on the road this season too and I don’t see that record getting better here.
Another form side currently are Stevenage and I think they are well worth supporting at Cambridge. I saw Stevenage a couple of weeks ago and they looked like a side highly motivated and with a purpose. Cambridge lack consistency at the minute and against a team who manage games well, are dangerous at set-pieces but have bits of quality in them I fancy the visitors to pick up a much needed win.
Carlisle’s season has well and truly hit the buffers. They haven’t scored a league goal in just shy of 10hrs of football and their only point in their last six matches came against Luton in a match that was so poor that even though it was 11 days ago if it was still going on now it would be 0-0. Crewe have found their feet in recent weeks and have won three of their last four, each without conceding. Their defeat in between could be put down to Newport’s new manager syndrome so I like Crewe here. Recent statistics suggest one goal could be enough for them and I fancy they’ll be good for it.
