There may only be two League 2 matches on Tuesday night but it is a massive evening at the top of the table as two big sides chasing the promotion dream have the opportunity to seriously enhance those claims. Nobody is yet to really dominate at the top of the table and power to glory but both Plymouth and Portsmouth have the chance to do that here.
Plymouth vs Blackpool
Plymouth ended a run of four matches without a win when they beat a fading Carlisle side at the weekend and now they take on a Blackpool side who have lost just one of their last 10 matches but who have more draws than an underwear factory.
This is the time of year that Plymouth tend to panic especially when they have the chance of going a step closer to promotion and it appears they are doing exactly that again. Their manager wants them to wear their away kit in this match because he thinks their poor recent home form is down to their green kit not being easy to see in the green seats and green grass!!!
They won’t have no problem seeing Blackpool’s orange shirts and given how difficult Blackpool are to beat I’m not sure I could be backing the home side here. The handicap on Blackpool is only +0.25 and I only really like taking that when I know the side I’m backing have a good chance of winning but given all their draws that isn’t the case so I’ll sit this one out.
Crawley vs Portsmouth
Speaking of sides who bottle it when the opportunity arises to move closer to promotion step forward Portsmouth. Twice in the last week they have had the chance to go third with home matches against bottom half opponents and both times they have messed it up.
In Saturday’s home defeat to Crewe, Portsmouth failed to register a single shot on target which is a major concern for their mentality. It might be that away from Fratton Park they can play with a bit more freedom but now they head to a Crawley side who have just held the leaders Doncaster, for me comfortably the best side this division has to offer.
Crawley may well be better than their league position suggests because when I saw them at Kenilworth Road last month they were only narrowly beaten. They have the ability to make it tough for the top sides and with Portsmouth struggling with expectation this is a perfect chance to take the home side on a large looking Asian handicap.
