Super Bowl LIII – Player Props and Special Markets Betting Preview

As ever with elite sporting events such as Super Bowl LIII there are a whole host of markets on offer for us to get stuck into and with a few hours left until the coin toss at Mercedes Benz Stadium, it would be rude of us not to look at some of them.

There are literally over 300 markets to bet on ranging from stats on the game to the national anthem length and plenty of betting opportunities on the half-time show, which this year will be performed by Maroon 5. We will leave that show alone but there are plenty of bets on the match to get stuck into.

Total Touchdowns

One of my favourite bets in big NFL matches involving high scoring sides this season has been the total touchdowns market and I’m not going to shirk it here with two very strong offenses on show. The line here is 6.5 which offers a better value to the 55.5pts because 28-21 in touchdowns (4-3) gets this line covered but we would need seven more points to get the point spread cleared.

Four of the last six Super Bowls have covered this line with one of the two that didn’t having exactly six and the other had an elite defence which this match doesn’t. The Patriots were involved in a high scoring AFC Championship match and the Rams can score fast and quickly too. It might take a quarter for this match to get going but eventually I think it will ignite and we’ll get seven touchdowns.

Touchdown Scorers

A popular market for those coming to the Super Bowl for the first time is the touchdown scorers’ one. As with a Premier League football match there are betting opportunities for the first, last and anytime scorer, with plenty of value to be had in all of the markets.

The general consensus is that the running backs will go in for the first touchdown but I don’t think that is necessarily the case. It was Alshon Jeffrey who notched first last year and with the Patriots likely to try and make Goff beat them through the air the 10/1 on Brandin Cooks to open the scoring against his former side is too big for me to ignore. He has more postseason yards than any Rams player and he’ll be fired up for this. Goff to Cooks could be the way forward.

Philip Dorsett has kind of gone under the radar for the New England Patriots in the postseason but he has bagged a couple of touchdowns and the 7/2 on him to notch again could be a little on the big side. You would think that the Rams will double cover the likes of Edelman or Gronkowski leaving Brady to find one of his lesser receivers. Dorsett has the profile to be busy in the red zone. I’ll have a nibble of that.

Player Markets

Near enough every player has a line on this match and there are two which stand out for me to get stuck into with the first of them actually being a defensive player in Cory Littleton. I’m expecting the Patriots to look to run the ball initially, if only to set up the pass and play action, so the linebacker should see plenty of the action. He has a combined 19 tackles in the two postseason matches, 12 of which came against the Saints last time out. He has a line of 8.5 here which he covered in seven of the 16 regular season matches. If the Patriots do run the ball Littleton could quickly become a key player. I’ll play the over on his combined tackles.

At the same time, I’m expecting the Patriots to look to shut down the Rams’ rushing game and make Goff throw the ball so the 20.5 receiving yard line given to Tyler Higbee looks attractive to me. He doesn’t get too much work for a tight end in the passing game but there will be the need for plenty of checkdowns and a target of the middle as the Patriots take the wider areas away. With that in mind Higbee could be much busier than usual here. I’ll play the over on his line too.

MVP

All too often the quarterbacks are the ones who land the Most Valuable Player award in the Super Bowl but there is a history of defensive men getting it from time to time too and given that in Aaron Donald we have an elite defender who finished 4.5 sacks clear of any other defender in the regular season, I think the 16/1 on him taking the award is too big here.

Los Angeles can’t win the Super Bowl if they don’t get pressure on Brady and while Ndamukong Suh will assist Donald in that quest I would wager if anyone gets to the veteran triggerman it will be Donald. A couple of sacks and regular pressure on Brady could see him land the spoils in a Super Bowl many expect to be offense dominated.
