Super Bowl LIV – San Francisco 49ers @ Kansas City Chiefs Tips and Betting Preview

All eyes will be on the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami on Sunday night as ‘The Greatest Show on Turf’ hits town when the Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers battle it out for the Vince Lombardi Trophy in Super Bowl LiV.

This more than any Super Bowl in recent past has a tasty and mouth-watering feel to it, helped by the fact that a strong case can be made for either team and the feeling that more than ever this has a genuine 50:50 feel to it.

Kansas City Chiefs

It has been a rocky road for the Kansas City Chiefs in this postseason but they have gone one better than they went last year and will now be aiming to win the Super Bowl for the first time in 50 years. They have come from miles behind and they have ridden their way from the front in these playoffs and have looked fantastic in doing so, and with the best player in the NFL right now leading the way for them, they should feel they will take a lot of beating.

We know all about the potency of the Kansas City offense but if they are going to win this Super Bowl, it might well be their defence that delivers the goods for them. If they are going to win they will need to stop the power run game of the San Francisco 49ers. The offensive line will have to have a big night as well against one of the most feared pass rushes we have seen in a while. The comfort blanket is that even if they can’t cope in those areas Patrick Mahomes is still good enough to win.

San Francisco 49ers

Halfway through the regular season, the San Francisco 49ers appeared to have no equal, and after a struggle in the second half of that campaign, they have come good again, displaying all the credentials generally regarded as needed to win this Super Bowl crown. They have run the ball powerfully and with purpose while their defence has stopped two decent quarterbacks from having any kind of positive impact.

The equation for the 49ers is a pretty simple one here. They have to continue to run the ball with authority and then they need to go after Patrick Mahomes and keep him contained as well as possible. If they can do that they will have every chance. Much like their opponents here though, their own quarterback shouldn’t be written off if he is needed as Jimmy Garropolo has the poise, and a big weapon in George Kittle, to keep the Niners in the game.

Betting

The age old adage of defences win championships will be tested to the absolute full here but I do think it will ring true. I accept that Patrick Mahomes can win from any position, and indeed we’ve already seen it in this postseason, but this is a young Chiefs side who are lacking Super Bowl experience, and that, more than anything could be the difference over the course of the four quarters here.

It is all well and good suggesting it is just another game and all that, but it isn’t. The build up is something else and things like the half time show and the attention is a different level so the experience of the occasion that a number of the San Francisco 49ers players have could be the telling factor, as well as their elite defence and pass rush and their iconic power running game. The case for the Chiefs is an obvious one but I’ll go with experience and championship winning foundations so it is the 49ers for me.
