Super League – Castleford Tigers vs Catalans Dragons Betting Preview

There is one match left in the current round of Super League matches and it comes from The Jungle on Sunday as the Castleford Tigers host the Catalans Dragons to conclude Round 21 of the season.

Castleford know that a win here will ensure Super League rugby next season while a win for the Dragons will move them back to within four points of top spot and put a four point gap between them and the chasing pack for that final playoff spot.

Castleford Tigers

Castleford go into this match off the back of a four match losing streak in all competitions and they will be looking to end that here if at all possible. Two of those defeats were against Wigan and Hull FC so the time for being overly concerned hasn’t arrived yet and if they can launch a run of form from here who knows where they could get to.

If they are going to launch that form they are going to have to defend much better than they have been this season. They have no problems in their attack but defensively they have wilted far too often and far too softly for their liking in recent times.

Catalans Dragons

The Dragons were looking like an awesome force earlier in the season but just recently they have come to a bit of a halt. They have suddenly lost their last three matches although they have been to the three sides above them in the table so once again they shouldn’t panic just yet but they will want a good performance just to restore their confidence.

Catalans have looked powerful in both attack and defence this season and they need to get back to that level here. In the last couple of weeks the timing of their attacking play has just been slightly off so I’m sure they will have been working on that to draw an improvement in that area.

Team News

The Tigers could have Rangi Chase in the side after he returned to the club. Denny Solomona returns from injury as do Ryan Hampshire and Frankie Mariano but Joel Moanghan, Jake Webster and Mike McMeeken are all out injured.

Catalans have Richie Myler back from injury while Greg Mounis and Fouad Yaha are also fit to return but the side have lost Todd Carney, Jason Baltieri and Glenn Stewart to injuries which isn’t an ideal situation for the French outfit.

Betting

At odds against I’m tempted to take the Dragons in this match. They’ve lost their last three but they’ve been to the top three in the table and there isn’t too much shame in that but given their injuries I’m just about put off enough to back them. I still don’t fancy taking them on though.

All the injuries in this match could make for a more open game especially in the wider areas and the three quarters and with Rangi Chase and Richie Myler out to impress on their returns to the game and potent finishers like Luke Dorn, Tony Gigot, Jodie Broughton, Pat Richards, Denny Solomona and Luke Gale I’m expecting points to be scored here.

The last three matches between these two have all had more than 60pts in them and I’m expecting a high scoring game here. Both sides have reliable goal kickers so we shouldn’t need an avalanche of tries due to a lack of conversions so over 48.5pts looks perfectly attainable to me in this one.
