Super League XXIII Super 8s – Wakefield Trinity vs St Helens Betting Preview

The last round of matches in the Super League begins with Wakefield Trinity taking on St Helens at Belle Vue in a contest which has plenty of intrigue but in terms of competitiveness there isn’t much on it.

Wakefield need to sprout wings and fly if they are to make it into the play-offs while St Helens need to find a way of picking their form back up ahead of the postseason where they will be under pressure to win the title.

Wakefield Trinity

I guess whenever a Super League season begins the ultimate aim of the Wakefield Trinity is to ensure they are in the competition the following year, despite the strides they are making as a club. They have secured that now so they can have a real good go for the remainder of the season and look to take a few scalps with them.

Mathematically they can still make it into the play-offs but the run they would need to go on and the results they would need to go in their favour would make it extremely unlikely unless one of the top four completely come off the rails. They have a good home record though and protecting that could give them something to play for.

St Helens

Having dominated the regular season things have gone quiet for the runaway leaders in recent times. They were shown up in the Challenge Cup semi-final when the Catalans Dragons took them apart and then they suffered a surprise, and somewhat worrying defeat to Huddersfield last week so this suddenly becomes a bigger match than it originally appeared for them.

We know St Helens have been the best attacking side in the competition but as Castleford Tigers found out last season it is hard to maintain form from the start right through to the finish. Whether Saints can come up with some different attacking plays without compromising their defence remains to be seen.

Team News

Wakefield Trinity have named Scott Grix in their squad for this match. The full-back has been out for three months and could well make his return here although Max Jowitt is expected to stay in the side. James Batchelor has recovered from illness.

St Helens will be without Luke Thompson for this match as he is suspended. Adam Swift is injured for the visitors but Regan Grace returns after he missed the defeat to Huddersfield last week.

Betting

It isn’t too difficult to make a case for Wakefield Trinity in this match but I fancy they will be getting St Helens at the wrong time and I expect the league leaders to show their worth and give this everything to get their form back on track. They have the week off next week so there is no reason to leave anything back here.

Wakefield can play with a bit of freedom which should make this an entertaining contest but I wonder if their free approach will leave them vulnerable to the St Helens attack. It could make this a high scoring contest but I don’t think the Saints will mind that too much. I fancy the visitors will get a win here.
