Super League XXIII – Widnes Vikings vs Hull KR Betting Preview

The latest round of Super League matches concludes on Saturday afternoon with a clash between bottom of the pile Widnes Vikings and a Hull KR side who are also deep in trouble but who are launching a burst to try and get out of it.

We already know that Widnes will be going through the qualifiers to maintain their place in the Super League but Hull KR are trying to avoid that and a win here will keep their slim hopes of a top eight finish alive.

Widnes Vikings

It has been a campaign to forget for Widnes Vikings thus far for so many reasons. At no stage have they got going in it with injuries killing them for the majority of it. That meant the end of Denis Betts as head coach but the change hasn’t worked at all because Francis Cummins is still looking for his first win since taking over.

You only have to look at the table to see where Widnes’ plight comes from. Not only are they stranded at the bottom but only Salford have scored fewer points than them and only Huddersfield have conceded more. It isn’t a good combination it must be said. Widnes could do with a couple of wins to build confidence ahead of the qualifiers next month.

Hull KR

It took a long while for the Robins to find any consistency this season although it is their first one back in Super League so to a lesser extent they can be forgiven. Injuries have not helped them at any stage either so there are a couple of excuses for Hull KR to use should they want to but the main thing is they head to Widnes in decent touch.

They have won two of their last three and drawn the other and all of a sudden the points are beginning to flow which was much needed for them. Their creative players are starting to get them into position at the right end of the pitch which is never a bad thing but just as importantly is the extra confidence is starting to filter into their defensive line.

Team News

Francis Cummins has rung the changes to his squad once again with Wellington Albert and Ted Chapelhow among those who come into it. The likes of Rhys Hanbury, Joe Mellor and Stefan Marsh are all available which helps.

Hull KR will be without their winger Ryan Shaw which is undoubtedly a blow for them but they are able to recall Justin Carney which may help the situation. Chris Clarkson is another who comes back into Tim Sheens’ squad.

Betting

I’m surprised that the bookmakers have this match as a pick em contest. I can’t be having it that way. Hull KR are in the sort of form which deserves respect and more importantly their key players are delivering the levels that can see them being very tough to beat in this match.

Widnes have only won three matches all season and still have too many injuries for my liking. Their confidence must be on the floor right now so the last thing they will want to face is a confident, bordering on rampant, Hull KR side who are scoring points for fun at the minute. I’ll take the Robins in this one.
