Super League XXV – Friday 31st January Matches Tips and Betting Preview

The opening round of the Super League continues on Friday night when four more teams get their campaigns underway on what should be a decent evening of action to back up a brilliant start of the season on Thursday.

We have one match in front of the cameras on Friday night and that is an immediate repeat of the Grand Final from last season while there is a good old Yorkshire derby away from the cameras which no doubt the TV will keep updated on.

St Helens vs Salford Red Devils

The main game on Friday night comes from the Totally Wicked Stadium where St Helens take on the team they overcame to win the Super League last term in the form of Salford Red Devils in the opening game of the campaign for both teams.

Saints came out on top 23-6 when these two met at Old Trafford last term and since then Salford have lost some big players with Jackson Hastings and Jake Bibby among those to have left the club. Saints haven’t changed anything on the pitch but they have had to change coach with Kristian Woolf coming in so it will be interesting to see how he goes in his first game as manager.

One thing that served Salford well last season was their defence and I’m not sure they would have lost that in the summer. All eyes will be on them to see how they go in attack with Kevin Brown pulling the strings now but with Tommy Makinson and a couple of others out for St Helens, the 16pts Salford are in receipt of just looks a little too big here.

Hull KR vs Wakefield Trinity

The match away from the cameras comes from Craven Park where two of the relegation favourites meet when Hull KR host Wakefield Trinity for what already feels like two big points in the season of both teams even before a ball has been kicked.

Bookmakers are finding it hard to split these two sides but I wonder if the more settled unit of the Wakefield Trinity players will come out on top here. There has been a huge turnover of players at Hull KR in the close season, and one was needed, but the injury to Mose Masoe could be quite important to their hopes and it might take them a while to recover from that. I think Trinity are the value here.
