Super League XXV – Saturday 15th August Matches Tips and Betting Preview

The Super League has reacted quickly to the news that Hull FC and Salford Red Devils could not play this weekend due to six Hull players recording positive Covid-19 tests to ensure that we still get four matches over the two days, beginning with a pair of games on Saturday.

It is a truncated weekend but actually the rearranged schedule has probably offered up a couple of better matches than were originally on the card so there is much to enjoy as the campaign leaves Headingley and heads for its second bio-secure destination of the Totally Wicked Stadium in St Helens. Both matches are live on Sky Sports once again.

The Format

There has been a change in the format of the season. The ‘loop matches’ and Magic Weekend have bitten the dust so teams will play 20 regular season matches ahead of the playoffs. Scrums are a thing of the past for the remainder of the season. They are being replaced with a tap restart to prevent the spread of the virus. The ‘six to go’ rule that is being used in NRL is also coming into the Super League with more eyes likely to be on the game with other sports yet to get back up and running.

Wakefield Trinity vs Catalans Dragons (16.15)

The opening match of the weekend sees the Wakefield Trinity looking to revive their campaign when they take on a Catalans Dragons side who shut everyone up from mentioning their record as poor travellers when they took Castleford Tigers to the cleaners last week.

I mentioned before a ball was kicked in this Super League season that Catalans Dragons were my idea of the winners of the competition and after a hit and miss start to the campaign we finally saw why last week. Lynchpin Israel Folau finally had people talking about his work on the pitch rather than his views off it and the Dragons rallied around him with a special performance. To Wakefield’s credit they certainly were not disgraced by Wigan Warriors in their first match back and you would expect them to come on for the run after that outing.

The problem Wakefield have here is that Catalans are a match ahead of them since the restart and looked like they were in the mood to do some damage last week. I don’t think there is any denying that the Dragons are the better team of the two here and the new rules might only exacerbate that. I expect the French outfit to not only win this match but to do it by more than four points.

Warrington Wolves vs Huddersfield Giants (18.30)

The second match of what is now just a double header on Saturday afternoon sees the beaten Grand Finalists of last season in Warrington Wolves taking on a Huddersfield Giants side who have been stewing on a disastrous defeat to Leeds Rhinos last time out.

There is no getting away from the fact that the way the Giants lost a couple of weeks ago is a major concern but it was clear they needed the hit out. What they probably didn’t need was two weeks between drinks but it wasn’t as though Warrington were amazing against Hull KR. They won easily in the end but the match was a contest for much of the first half but the Robins couldn’t keep up their exciting style and succumbed easily. I don’t think Huddersfield will go down as easily here but we just don’t know how they’ll react to that loss to Leeds so I’m happy to watch this one rather than bet on it.
