Super League XXV – Sunday 30th August Matches Tips and Betting Preview

The Super League weekend comes to a close on Sunday when we have an exciting looking triple header of action as the updated schedule to catch up after the lockdown continues at a right old lick at the Halliwell Jones Stadium.

Midweek matches and an even more hectic schedule is on the horizon for the Super League sides so these three matches, which are all live on Sky for those of us who are in the UK, could carry even more importance.

The Format

There has been a change in the format of the season. The ‘loop matches’ and Magic Weekend have bitten the dust so teams will play 20 regular season matches ahead of the playoffs. Scrums are a thing of the past for the remainder of the season. They are being replaced with a tap restart to prevent the spread of the virus. The ‘six to go’ rule that is being used in NRL is also coming into the Super League with more eyes likely to be on the game with other sports yet to get back up and running.

Hull KR vs St Helens (13.00)

The first match of the day sees the champions St Helens taking on a Hull KR side who seem to have adopted a very exciting and expansive style of play now that they know there is no danger of them being relegated this season.

That should make for a really good watch here if the Robins adopt the same tactics they should against the Warrington Wolves. That will be brave or risky depending on how you look at it but fair play to them for realising the potential to entertain. St Helens have certainly been entertaining since the restart. In the three matches they have played they have racked up 92 points and you would expect that total increase significantly here. Saints are missing a couple of big players in Tommy Makinson and Mark Percival though and while I wouldn’t want to be against them on the handicap, those absences make me wary about being on them so I’ll sit this one out.

Huddersfield Giants vs Hull FC (16.15)

Two sides whose return to the sport has been stop-start meet in the second game of the day when the Huddersfield Giants, who seem to be making single point defeats a bad habit, go up against Hull FC for whom this is only their second match in five months.

Huddersfield have played two matches since the restart and have agonisingly lost them both by a point. They won’t need reminding of the fact that they should have beaten the Leeds Rhinos but collapsed late on. They almost made up for that against the Warrington Wolves but nothing was doing there in the end. Hull FC have only played one match since the return, a game in which they got walloped in, and then had to go back into hibernation because of positive Covid tests. There are way more questions than answers about both these two sides so this is a pretty easy one to swerve.

Warrington Wolves vs Wakefield Trinity (18.30)

The final match of the weekend sees this week’s ‘home’ team in action when the Warrington Wolves go up against a Wakefield Trinity side who certainly can’t complain at being short of competitive reps after being the only team involved in the Challenge Cup last weekend who are playing this week.

Wakefield have drawn a bit of a short straw because not only have they taken a couple of sizeable hidings off the Catalans Dragons in the last fortnight but they have not lost players to isolation as they came into contact with Dragons players who tested positive for the virus. That means Wakefield will be without the likes of David Fifita, Jay Pitts, Alex Walker and Liam Kay. Tony Gigot returns but I sense they’ll need more than him to tame this vibrant Warrington side. Warrington go into the game much fresher than their opponents having not played last week and they are also much closer to full strength too. Wakefield have shipped 117pts in their three matches since the restart and I expect Warrington to feast on weakened prey here. 22pts sounds like a big handicap but if Wire get in front early they could run up a big winning margin here.
