Super League XXV – Thursday 22nd October Matches Tips, TV and Betting Preview

After the wonderful Challenge Cup final last weekend we have another round of Super League matches to look forward to from Thursday as the season continues in its quest to finish despite all the challenges that it faces.

The main course of this round comes along on Friday but the starter shouldn’t be too bad over the course of Thursday as four teams with little to no pressure on them look to put on a show at the Totally Wicked Stadium.

The Format

There has been a change in the format of the season. The ‘loop matches’ and Magic Weekend have bitten the dust so teams will play 20 regular season matches ahead of the playoffs. Scrums are a thing of the past for the remainder of the season. They are being replaced with a tap restart to prevent the spread of the virus. The ‘six to go’ rule that is being used in NRL is also coming into the Super League with more eyes likely to be on the game with other sports yet to get back up and running. It has since been announced that the Super League table will be based on point percentage rather than total points.

Where to Watch

Both matches are live on TV on Thursday evening with Sky Sports Arena and Sky Sports Mix showing both games in full. The programme begins at 5.15pm and goes right through to 10pm.

Castleford Tigers vs Hull KR (17.30)

The opening match of the double header of action sees the former Grand Finalists in Castleford Tigers taking on Hull KR in a match which pits two of the bottom three teams in the Super League table together.

Both these teams are just playing out time on the season now and looking to make sure their schedule gets completed while maybe looking for something they can take into next season as well. That has been reflected in their form since lockdown where Castleford have only won one of their nine Super League matches and Hull KR haven’t fared much better. I happen to think that a lot of the issues with the Hull KR form has been their challenging schedule though and I suspect they are getting a bigger start than they should here with them being in receipt of 12 points.

Castleford are slowly getting players back which should see their form improve but motivation must still be pretty low for a team playing for nothing who know that when normality returns they are as good as anything in the competition on their day. Hull KR still have to work to get to that level so they can get a lot more out of the match than their opponents here so I’ll ride the Robins on that start.

Huddersfield Giants vs Wakefield Trinity (19.45)

The second match of the night is a good old Yorkshire derby between two more sides who don’t really have a whole lot to play for with their positions in the current Super League table looking pretty bleak after their struggles throughout the campaign.

Huddersfield had struggled quite badly until Luke Robinson took over and although their form has picked up under him, they haven’t always looked convincing, although in Aidan Sezer they have a man who can win any match on his own and who in a normal campaign would be a genuine Man of Steel contender. Wakefield haven’t been able to get going. They have had a series of issues with Covid-19 and that is back to haunt them again here too with a couple of unnamed players missing due to having to isolate.

You would think that everything points the way of the Giants here but I’ve taken on a Covid impacted Trinity before and lost and I’ve backed Huddersfield and been found out as well so I’m not all that keen on getting involved here. I certainly can’t be backing Wakefield with their Covid situation but I’ve stopped being so quick to take them on even though logic suggests they should be well beaten here.
