Super League XXV – Wigan Warriors vs Hull FC Tips and Betting Preview

The Super League weekend concludes on Sunday afternoon and it does so with the pick of the matches in this round as the former champions Wigan Warriors play host to one of the dark horses for this season in Hull FC.

The two teams have played three matches this season already and both have two wins and a loss on their record, so whoever comes out on top here will join the Huddersfield Giants and Castleford Tigers on six points.

Wigan Warriors

It is the natural thing these days to look at the form of a team and try to pick holes in it, and if you really want to do that then you can point to the fact that they have only beaten a 12 man Warrington side and a Toronto Wolfpack team who have struggled in the Super League so far. In between those two matches they were beaten by the Castleford Tigers so there is an argument to say it hasn’t been as good a start to the season as it looks.

When you consider the sort of player turnover they had in the close season it isn’t a huge surprise, but they can’t keep being below par forever. It might be that this match being away from the TV cameras and the spotlight takes the pressure off them and they play their best. You would have to think they will need to give their best performance of the campaign so far if they are going to come out on top in this one.

Hull FC

Hull FC won their opening two matches of the season. They saw off the Leeds Rhinos at Headingley and then won the derby on their own patch before a defeat to St Helens last week. That loss is no bad thing anyway given that St Helens could well be the standout side in the competition again, but even if they are not there is often a drop off the week after a derby, given the intensity that those matches contain.

Hull FC are full of power up the middle and their back line is much improved these days as well so it is not hard to see why so many judges have them labelled as dark horses this season. They have the chance here to lay a bit of a marker down for the remainder of the campaign and announce themselves as big players in this competition. If they can pick up a win here it will propel them to the position they want to be in.

Team News

Wigan Warriors will be without their captain Sean O’Loughlin for this match as he suffered an eye injury in the win over the Toronto Wolfpack last week. Dom Manfredi could be in line for his seasonal bow however.

Hull FC expect Danny Houghton and Bureta Faraimo available for this match but they are going to be missing Carlos Tuimavave with a foot injury and Ratu Naulago who has a hamstring problem. They both went down in the loss to Saints last week.

Betting

I said last week when previewing the Wigan Warriors in their match against the Toronto Wolfpack that I have serious reservations over their attacking play so far this season. Nothing really changed there and so I’m not convinced by any means that they are going to cover eight points against this Hull FC side that can mix it with anyone in the league and who will be desperate to show their credentials in this match.

I’m not actually ruling out Hull FC winning this match, but given the conditions which could be a bit of a lottery, rather than back them on the nose and lose to a freak play influenced by the elements. Eight points is enough of an advantage for me to ride Hull FC with. I don’t think there will be much between these two whichever way the outcome goes so Hull FC with that eight point start is the way to go for me.
