Super League XXVI – Monday 30th August Matches Tips, TV and Betting Preview

There may be no top flight football action on bank holiday Monday but the Super League is more than happy to fill the void as a full round of matches take place over the course of what could be a pivotal day in the competition.

There are six matches in all on Monday with two of them being live on TV for us in the UK to enjoy throughout the day. The TV coverage is likely to keep everything updated throughout the evening so we should be able to keep across all the action.

Monday’s fixtures are as follows: (UK kick off and TV in brackets)

Salford Red Devils v Hull FC (14.00)

Wakefield Trinity v Leeds Rhinos (15.00)

Castleford Tigers v Wigan Warriors (17.00 – Sky Main Event, Sky Arena & Sky Mix)

Catalans Dragons v Leigh Centurions (18.15)

Huddersfield Giants v Hull Kingston Rovers (19.30)

Warrington Wolves v St Helens (19.30 – Sky Main Event, Sky Arena & Sky Mix)

Preview

The televised action begins at The Jungle where Castleford Tigers will look to build on their four match winning run when they host the Wigan Warriors who appear in a bit of a slump. Both these sides are currently in the top six but can’t afford many more defeats if they want to stay there. The second televised match comes from the Halliwell Jones Stadium where we could have a Grand Final dress rehearsal as the Warrington Wolves, in third place in the table heading into the match, host second placed St Helens who will be looking to lay a marker down.

The other four matches all contain interest in the race for the top six and the League Leaders’ Shield. Hull FC probably can’t afford another loss if they are to make the play-offs so their match away to Salford Red Devils is simply must win. Leeds Rhinos have won their last three matches to move into the top six but they face a tricky trip to a seemingly rejuvenated Wakefield Trinity side while the leaders Catalans Dragons host rock bottom Leigh Centurions. The other match sees Hull KR looking to gatecrash the top six when they make the trip across Yorkshire to take on the Huddersfield Giants.

Betting

I’ll go with a couple of bets which come in the two TV matches. I’ll begin with the Castleford Tigers to cover 6.5 points against a Wigan Warriors side who look a little troubled to me and I’m not convinced it is purely down to their injuries and absentees now. They looked a lost side against the Leeds Rhinos on Wednesday evening and although they have had 24 hours more recovery for this match I don’t think it is going to help them. It isn’t ideal that Castleford will be without Paul McShane for this one but to be fair Adam Milner played well there when he went in that position and they do have their captain Michael Shenton back for this one. Cas have won their last four and look to be finishing the season with a flourish whereas Wigan are in a slump. Castleford can cover 6.5pts here.

The other bet I like is for the match between the Warrington Wolves and St Helens to have less than 37.5 points. Matches between these two are generally low scoring anyway and the absence of Jonny Lomax for the visitors isn’t likely to change that. St Helens are always defensively strong though so the Warrington Wolves will have to work incredibly hard to score points themselves. We saw evidence of that when these two met earlier in the season when the Wolves won 6-2. Four of the last six meetings between these teams have gone under 37.5 points while another had exactly 38. In a huge match for both the under looks the play to me.
