Super League XXVI – Wigan Warriors vs Warrington Wolves Tips, TV and Betting Preview

Super League is back in the spotlight again on Wednesday night when two of the potential Grand Finalists at the end of the season battle it out when the Wigan Warriors take on the Warrington Wolves in a huge clash.

We should have had second match on the night with Castleford taking on St Helens but that got cancelled with the Tigers unable to raise a team so all eyes will be on the DW Stadium for what is a standout clash.

Where to watch

The match will be shown live and in full on the Sky Sports Arena channel with the build-up to the contest beginning at 7.30pm and the match kicking off at 7.45pm.

Wigan Warriors

You could never really say that the Wigan Warriors have been at full pelt and completely convincing this season but a campaign which was looking solid enough has really hit the skids in the last month or so. They have lost their last three matches and although injuries are a huge reason why they have slumped, concerns will just be starting to mount in light of their problems with personnel not showing any signs of getting any lighter.

I think most judges were happy to write their walloping by the Catalans Dragons off as a bad day at the office but subsequent losses to Hull KR and Wakefield Trinity would have the panic sirens sounding in their fanbase if nothing else. They have only scored 14 points in those three matches and although their defence hasn’t been blown away except in France they need a serious improvement in attack and fast.

Warrington Wolves

I’m still not convinced I ever know what to expect from the Warrington Wolves but they have bounced back from that shocking defeat in the Challenge Cup a few weeks ago with three straight wins in the Super League. They look like they are going from strength to strength and if this squad ever applies consistency in performances to the talent they have on paper then they are going to be right in the deep end of the mix come play-off time.

Throwing in the odd shocking performance which evaporates confidence is something that continually hampers this Warrington side but on the evidence of their last three outings they might be getting over that issue. Wins over Wakefield Trinity and Leigh Centurions should be par for the course for a team of this quality but the one over St Helens in the middle of this three game burst was one which laid a marker down for what Warrington can achieve this season.

Team News

Wigan Warriors were already without plenty of players but they will miss Zak Hardaker, John Bateman and Bevan French due to injury for this match. That leaves them looking very exposed in the full-back area in particular.

Warrington Wolves are expected to have Jason Clark back for this contest and with all their internationals seemingly getting through that friendly last week in one piece Steve Price is expected to be able to a name a strong side.

Betting

It is hard to go against the Warrington Wolves in this match. Regular readers will know I’m always a little wary about putting my trust in the Warrington Wolves because they flatter to deceive too often for my liking but it is just impossible to ignore the injuries that the Wigan Warriors are carrying. They have largely muddled along despite their injuries but the latest three are all huge players for them who would be a loss to any side.

Even if you did ignore those injury woes and just placed bets on this on current form you have a side in Wigan who have lost their last three and barely scored a point against a team in Warrington who have won their last three and kept the potent St Helens to just a penalty in their match a couple of weeks ago. Sport doesn’t always work out in logical ways but you’ve got to think that all things being equal, with everything we can use to form a bet, the Wolves look very good things here.
