The Super League XXVII weekend continues on Friday night as three matches take place on what should be a very enjoyable evening in the competition, one where a number of sides will be looking to make progress this early in the campaign.
We have one match in front of the TV cameras on Friday evening and I’m sure the TV coverage will have regular updates on the other two for those who aren’t happening to go to those games. There is social media and radio too.
Wakefield Trinity vs Toulouse Olympique (19.30)
The first match to kick off on Friday night comes from Belle Vue where Wakefield Trinity will look to bounce back from their poor defeat to the Leeds Rhinos last week when they host the new boys to the competition in the form of Toulouse Olympique.
Both these sides go into this match looking for their first win of the season. Clearly they will be keen to get it here not just to ease the pressure on what would naturally come along with five matches without a win but also to give themselves some confidence to move forward with. Prior to last week Wakefield had been competitive but they were very poor against the Rhinos and that is a concern. Toulouse understandably needed a couple of weeks to get to grips with the competition but in the last couple of games against decent opposition they have shown a much more competitive edge. Importantly they are scoring points and that will serve them well as the season goes on and although I wouldn’t be confident they will win this match, the pressure that is on this means I don’t really see this being won by more than two scores so I’ll take Toulouse with a dozen start.

Salford Red Devils vs Hull KR (19.45)
Two sides who have had up and down starts to their season meet at the AJ Bell Stadium when Salford Red Devils go up against Hull KR in a match which pits the two surprise packages from the last two seasons against each other.
Salford opened up the season with a couple of wins, although they don’t look quite as impressive now as they did at the time, and have lost their last two outings Hull KR have lost three of their opening four matches with a win over Castleford in that time. They played well on that occasion but were no match for St Helens last week, although so far this season not many sides have been. If I was pushed to back a winner here I would probably side with the visitors but it would be more of a hunch than anything that inspires me with confidence so I’m happy to sit this one out and leave it alone.
St Helens vs Warrington Wolves (20.00 – Sky Sports Arena)
The final match to kick off on Friday evening is the one which pits two of the heavyweight sides of the competition against each other when the reigning champions St Helens host a Warrington Wolves team who will be dreaming of Old Trafford this term.
St Helens have started the season like a house on fire, blowing four opponents away with a flurry of scoring and defence as tight as we would expect of someone of their status in the game. Warrington have won three of their four outings so far this season but they fell over the line against Leeds in their opening match and were then beaten by a makeshift Catalans Dragons side last week. It might be significant that when the Wolves come up against better level opposition they have struggled and they will be without Josh Charnley for this match too which is less than ideal. St Helens miss Konrad Hurrell due to suspension but they are relentless in defence at the minute and have more than enough options in attack to expose a Warrington team who can get sloppy in defence. This shouldn’t be a match won easily by either side but I fancy St Helens might just be too good and will pull away the longer it goes on.
