Preview

The TV cameras head to the DW Stadium where the Wigan Warriors will look to consolidate second spot when they host the Leeds Rhinos in what is a repeat of the semi-final from last season which the Rhinos were able to win. Elsewhere, it might be a significant night at the Halliwell Jones Stadium where the leaders Warrington Wolves look to keep hold of pole position when they host third placed Hull KR, who cross the Pennines in very good form.

The other two matches sees a couple of underachievers chasing top six chasers with the Castleford Tigers looking to turn a very disappointing start to the season around when they host the Catalans Dragons who look like they are finding their feet. Huddersfield Giants might be the most disappointing team of the lot based on pre-season expectations. They will be looking to give their fans something to cheer when the Leigh Leopards visit the John Smith’s Stadium.

Betting

The league table would suggest that the match between the Wigan Warriors and the Leeds Rhinos will be a routine home win but I’m not convinced that is how it is going to play out. I think the Rhinos are at their best when they are unexpected to win such as their only away win this term at St Helens. Leeds went to Wigan in the semi-final last season when few gave them much hope and they turned Wigan over and while I wouldn’t say with confidence that they’ll win here, although I certainly wouldn’t rule it out unless the rumours of a dressing room bust up are real, I do think that they can stay within a dozen of a Wigan side who looked a little one-paced at Hull FC last week. This is a chance for Leeds to show they can still be a force to be reckoned with and I think we’ll see the best of them here. That might not be enough to win but I do think it will be enough to stay within a dozen of a Wigan side who are a lot easier to contain without Jai Field.

The other bet I like over the course of the night is the one which sees the Leigh Leopards going to the Huddersfield Giants. This is another match where the visitors are getting a bigger start on the handicaps than they should be. You could make a case for the Leigh Leopards actually winning this match given the indifferent form of the Giants so far this term but I still expect Huddersfield to come good at some point. I expect this to be a lower scoring contest with Leigh looking really good defensively, conceding just 12 points in their last three matches, and Huddersfield having a tight defence too. Both teams lack that genuine spark at half-back to rip a team to shreds, instead they rely on clever kicks but the opposing full-backs will be all over those. A low scoring game makes me think a converted try that Leigh are getting on the start might be too many.
