Super League XXX – Salford Red Devils vs Huddersfield Giants Tips, TV and Betting Preview

The Super League XXX season returns from the Challenge Cup break on Thursday night when two sides who had differing fortunes in the knockout competition clash at the AJ Bell Stadium where Salford Red Devils host the Huddersfield Giants.

These two have both started the season very poorly and are still looking for their first win of the campaign at the fifth time of asking. One of them will get off the mark here in what feels like a huge game for both sides.

Where to watch

The match will be shown live and in full on the Sky Sports+ channel with the very short lead up to the contest beginning at 7.55pm ahead of the 8pm kick off.

Salford Red Devils

The Salford Red Devils have been making plenty of noises in the Super League this season but not necessarily for the right reasons. Their off field issues have been a divisive topic for the opening month of the campaign and they have now had to start selling players as a result of that, which in theory is only going to see their struggles continue. They do have the solace of having got themselves together to reach the quarter final of the Challenge Cup and now they will be looking to fire up their Super League campaign.

There has been little that has gone right for the Red Devils in Super League. We can ignore their opening game where they named a reserve team to take on St Helens but even since then they have only put up 20 points in the three matches that they have played. It isn’t like their defence has particularly improved much since then either as they have shipped 96 points in those three outings so the Red Devils are going to need a massive improvement at both ends of the pitch.

Huddersfield Giants

Things haven’t been quite as dramatic for the Huddersfield Giants but the results have been exactly the same and unlike the Salford Red Devils, they were not able to pick up some confidence with a win in the Challenge Cup last week. This always felt like it was going to be a transition or a rebuild season for the Giants with a new head coach and talks continuing over where their future lies with a move to Halifax on the cards and a tough start probably isn’t the biggest surprise in the world.

To be fair to Huddersfield, they have been competitive in most of the matches that they have played this term but the big problem that they have is that they are struggling to put points on the board. They are yet to register 20 points in a Super League match this season and they didn’t get to that total in the cup against Wakefield Trinity last week either. That will need to change if they are to offer up anything competitive this season.

Team News

Since the Salford Red Devils were last in Super League action they have lost the services of Brad Singleton and Marc Sneyd while Nene MacDonald is expected to leave the club too so this is a weakened Red Devils side going into battle here.

New signing Niall Evalds has been named in the 21-man squad for this match for the Huddersfield Giants which should boost their attacking play with him being one of the best support backs in the league.

Betting

I’m not sure that you could trust either team on the winless runs that they are on. The win in the Challenge Cup last week might five Salford Red Devils a little more in the way of confidence but I’m going nowhere near them in the current circumstances, especially with their defence haemorrhaging points in the fashion that they are. To be honest, I don’t really want the Huddersfield Giants carrying my money either, even though I do think that they are the likelier winners.

The bet I would prefer instead is for there to be more than 36.5 points in the match. Admittedly we are riding the two worst attacks in the competition in that regard but we are also taking on a defence which has conceded more than 40 points per game in Salford and a nudge under 25 per game for Huddersfield so even if you reduce the Salford one to the 32 points that their strongest squad have conceded per game we still get an average of 57 points that these two are conceding. If they can’t score against these defences they have got big problems so I’m expecting more points than is expected here.
