The Hundred 2024 – Northern Superchargers Team Guide and Betting Preview

The Northern Superchargers had a tournament to forget in The Hundred last season as they finished bottom of the pile and as is so often the case after a shambles of a campaign change has been made. That is both on the field and off it and a new dawn begins for the Headingley based outfit this term, where optimism is fairly high after a decent draft making full use of the first pick and some players heading into the tournament in decent form. A much better showing will be expected.

Preview

The Northern Superchargers will look to win the tournament with Andrew Flintoff crossing the Pennines to coach them. This will be his first major coaching role and he will be keen to impress. The first thing he did was put Harry Brook in as captain and while him being away for the opening week of the competition is a negative, having Ben Stokes available for half of the group stage will make up for that. The Superchargers have recruited some power batters with Jason Roy and Nicholas Pooran particularly explosive.

The good thing for the Superchargers is that their additions of those two haven’t really come at the expense of their bowling. Mitchell Santner is a good operator with the ball while they don’t lack for firepower with the likes of Reece Topley, Matty Potts, Dillon Pennington all having been in England squads in recent times and Tom Lawes touted as a potential next cab off the rank in that regard. Don’t be surprised if the Superchargers go deep in the competition.

Betting

Harry Brook was the leading run scorer for the Northern Superchargers last season but he is going to miss the opening two matches of this campaign and two home games at that so I think someone else will top score for the Superchargers. With Nicholas Pooran expected to arrive late with his Major League Cricket franchise into the playoffs of that competition the door could be open for the two men I presume will open the batting in Jason Roy and Matt Short.

The former might feel he has a point to prove after being discarded by both the Oval Invincibles and England in recent times but the latter has looked in fabulous form for the San Francisco Unicorns in the Major League Cricket competition that he is the pick here. We saw last season where only Brook scored more runs than him that he is suited to Headingley and he could score very quickly there this term. If anything he has grown in stature after another excellent Big Bash campaign and the MLC offering and at 14/5 I would be surprised if he isn’t the leading run scorer for the Superchargers this term.
