Tokyo 2020 Olympics – Football Quarter Finals Tips and Betting Preview

We are down to the knockout stages in the men’s football at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and on Saturday we will see all four quarter finals played out. This is a big evening of football out in Japan because the winners will be battling for the medals.

We’ve already seen some surprises in this competition which is why you won’t see the likes of France, Argentina or Germany in the cast list for these quarter finals. We do still have Brazil, Spain and the hosts Japan left in though.

The Quarter Final line up is as follows: (UK kick off in brackets)

Spain vs Ivory Coast (09.00)

Japan vs New Zealand (10.00)

Brazil vs Egypt (11.00)

South Korea vs Mexico (12.00)

The two heavyweight sides left in the competition are Spain and Brazil and if you want to watch their matches you will be pleased to know that they don’t clash at any point unless one goes to extra time. Spain actually kick off the day when they go up against an Ivory Coast side who have actually shown plenty of danger in the tournament to date. Brazil go up against an Egypt side who never really showed much in the group stage until the final game when they timed their only win to perfection to make it through.

The other two matches sees Asian sides looking to make progress with the second quarter final seeing the hosts Japan taking on a New Zealand side who weren’t expected to make it this far and who don’t have much to lose from here on in. It might be that the pick of the clashes in the last eight is the last one to kick off as South Korea take on Mexico in a battle between two sides who have looked capable of winning this tournament so far.

Betting

There is one bet that I like over the course of the day on Saturday and it comes in that last match to kick off where I’m expecting to see goals. I say that because South Korea have been the leading scorers in the competition to date with 10 goals but Mexico aren’t a million miles behind. They have eight goals from their three matches and the style of both these teams is to get the ball into dangerous areas and look to attack.

I guess the price being odds against on over 2.5 is as high as it is because this is a knockout match and things are expected to be a lot tighter than they were throughout the groups but if you think to the women’s quarter finals on Friday, it proved to be anything but that. I suspect the reason for that is the energy zapping conditions. These two sides are in position to cope with those and as a result of that I expect them to deliver an entertaining quarter final and at least three goals.
