Tokyo 2020 Olympics – Football Semi-Finals Tips and Betting Preview

We are down to the semi-finals in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics men’s football competition with both the matches taking place out in Japan on Tuesday. The four sides in action already know they will be battling it out for medals on Friday and here we determine who plays for which colour.

We have the tournament hosts, defending champions, pre-event favourites and the former winners left in the final four so we should be in for a decent day of football action, particularly when you consider what is on the line.

Mexico vs Brazil (09.00)

The opening semi-final sees North America against South America as the 2012 champions Mexico go up against the 2016 winners and defending champions Brazil in what should be a real high quality semi-final.

Brazil are the star-studded outfit in this competition with the likes of Richarlison, Matheus Cunha, Antony and Gabriel Martinelli in their squad but it is Mexico who have been the entertainers, scoring a massive 14 goals in their four games in the competition so far, while conceding six at the other end. Much like in the Copa America earlier this summer, Brazil have largely laboured their way through to this stage. In that tournament when they met their match they were beaten and given that I’m on Mexico at 33/1 for this competition I’m hoping that happens here but I do expect to see goals. It appears to be the staple diet for this Mexico side while Brazil have the players to hurt them at the other end. I’m surprised we’re still getting generous odds on Mexico matches having over 2.5 goals. All four of their games have covered this line and while Brazil have laboured in the main they still stuck four past Germany. I’ll take the over here.

Japan vs Spain (12.00)

The second semi-final sees the tournament hosts Japan going up against the team who went into the tournament as the pre-event favourites in Spain, although you could argue that they haven’t done much to justify that billing yet.

A lot was expected of Spain when you consider that they have six members of their Euro 2020 squad which made the semi-final of that competition in this one but to date all they have returned are three draws and a 1-0 win, with one of those draws converted into victory in extra time against the Ivory Coast in the semi-final. In contrast to that, Japan won all three of their group matches which included a 4-0 thumping of France in the last of those, and although a 0-0 draw against New Zealand in a match they won in extra time doesn’t look the best form, there was a lot of pressure and tension on that. I wouldn’t be completely surprised to see a naturally motivated Japan side come through here but even though they’ve been ordinary so far, I can’t really bring myself to take on this talented Spain squad so I’ll sit this one out.
