Tokyo 2020 Olympics – Tennis Monday 26th July Matches Tips and Betting Preview

The tennis action continues out at the Ariake Tennis Park in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics on Monday when a number of players take to the court for the second time with the singles players looking for spots in the last 16 of the respective competitions.

We have a very good schedule on the main courts with the likes of Novak Djokovic, Naomi Osaka, Alexander Zverev and Aryna Sabalenka among those on the card. There is plenty of competitive action on the outside courts as well.

Men’s Singles

The pick of the matches in the men’s singles on Monday sees the emphatic tournament favourite Novak Djokovic taking on Jan-Lennard Struff while the likes of Lorenzo Sonego, Daniil Medvedev, Alexander Zverev and Pablo Carreno Busta are other household names who are on a reduced men’s line up as the field begins to get whittled down ahead of the business end of the tournament.

There is one I like in the men’s event. That is to take on Lorenzo Sonego. That isn’t because I don’t like Sonego, under normal circumstances I would consider him a danger here but he comes into this match off the back of a three setter which went the distance on Saturday which lasted more than three hours and in this heat and humidity has to be a huge negative. Nikoloz Basilashvili might not be the most reliable opponent to take him on with but it was only four months ago he was winning the title in Qatar and he had a good morale boosting win in the first round here. Importantly he was only on court for 74 minutes. The longer this goes the more you have to fancy Basilashvili so at 6/5 he looks a fair bet here.

Women’s Singles

The star attraction of these games, Naomi Osaka, is back on court on Monday when she faces off against Viktorija Golubic who has been in decent form for a while. It might be that the pick of the women’s matches is the second one on the main court as Aryna Sabalenka takes on Donna Vekic. Other leading lights on court include Garbine Muguruza, Iga Swiatek, Belinda Bencic and the French Open champion Barbora Krejcikova.

The bet I like here is for the Wimbledon quarter finalist Ajla Tomljanovic to see off Elina Svitolina in another of the better looking matches on the third day of action. Tomljanovic has been going well for a while and showed her qualities at Wimbledon where she saw off the likes of Jelena Ostapenko on her way to the last eight where the scheduling might have mugged her off. Even then she lost to the eventual winner. The big thing in her favour here is Svitolina had to go for more than three hours against Laura Siegemund in the previous round and the heat and humidity in Tokyo on Saturday must have taken something out of her. I think she’s a vulnerable seed here.

Doubles

There aren’t actually that many doubles matches on the schedule on Monday and certainly none that have caught my eye from a betting point of view. There is British interest in the form of Jamie Murray and Neal Skupski but their match isn’t one I fancy betting on. I’ll stick with the two singles bets.
