Tokyo 2020 Olympics – Tennis Sunday 25th July Matches Tips and Betting Preview

The tennis competition continues at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics on Sunday when another bunch of first round matches in the singles and doubles tournaments get played out with the heat and the humidity already causing a few talking points for the players.

We saw the likes of Novak Djokovic, Daniil Medvedev, Fabio Fognini, Iga Swiatek and Maria Sakkari all breeze into the second round on Saturday and on Sunday the likes of Stefanos Tsitsipas, Naomi Osaka and Ash Barty will be looking to join them.

Men’s Singles

There are some huge names on show in the men’s singles on Sunday with Stefanos Tsitsipas and Alexander Zverev the big two in terms of seeds who are in action but Andy Murray also begins his defence of the title. He faces off against Felix Auger-Aliassime in the pick of the first round matches. Hubert Hurkacz, Gael Monfils and Diego Schwartzman are just some of the other players who take to the courts on Sunday.

There is one bet I like in the men’s draw and it comes on one of the outside courts where I fancy Federico Coria to get the better of Mikhail Kukushkin. I wouldn’t say either have been in brilliant form on hard courts recently but while it was on the clay, the Argentine did at last make a final in Sweden last week, where he lost to Casper Ruud which was no bad effort. He beat Marco Cecchinato and Cristian Garin on the way to that final which is encouraging. Kukushkin isn’t really going anywhere in his career and he’ll need a much better performance than we’ve seen from him recently. He has lost his last nine main draw matches and when you think Coria coming from Argentina will be better suited to the heavier conditions and the humidity in the air, I think the even money on him to win this looks a touch too big.

Women’s Singles

It is a big day in the women’s draw on Sunday as the truly heavyweight names all come out to play on a day that sees all the leading contenders for the title on show. That includes the world number one and recently crowned Wimbledon champion Ash Barty, the poster girl of these games Naomi Osaka and the Wimbledon finalist Karolina Pliskova. Other household names on show on Sunday include Aryna Sabalenka, Petra Kvitova and Garbine Muguruza.

I’ve had a good look through the card here and as with the men’s draw on Saturday, most of the big names look to have pretty comfortable draws so we are either having to take short prices or hefty handicap lines and I’m not in a rush to take either of those this early in the competition. It might be that the heat maybe plays havoc with someone like Kvitova but I’m not convinced her opponent will have the tools to get the job done so I’ll leave that alone.

Doubles

There have already been a few surprises as there always is in the early stages of the doubles as teams cobbled together to be able to compete in the one nationality familiarise themselves with their partner. That is likely to continue on Sunday so we’ll leave it until later in the week before we get stuck into the pairs events.
